Quick answer

How does Laos embassy attestation work?

Laos embassy attestation is a two-step legalisation. The Ministry of External Affairs first attests your Indian document, and the Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in New Delhi then legalises the MEA stamp. Because Laos has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille on its own does not satisfy offices there.

Typical Laos files include Lao officials and students who completed degrees or training courses in India, Indian professionals taking up work in Laos, and Indian companies supplying pharmaceuticals, vehicles or engineering goods to Lao buyers. Lao is the official language, and some offices may ask for a Lao translation once the legalisation is complete. Commercial papers follow a separate track that starts at a Chamber of Commerce.

Part 1 · Apostille or attestation

Laos needs embassy attestation, not an apostille

Laos does not appear in the HCCH Apostille Convention status table (checked October 2026; table last updated 30 June 2026). Indian documents for Laos therefore need MEA attestation and then legalisation by the Lao Embassy; an apostille alone is not recognised.

Before you send documents for Laos

Send us

  • Original documents, not laminated
  • A copy of your passport
  • A copy of the document holder’s passport and any checklist from the Lao ministry, employer or buyer
  • Your return address and phone number

Watch out for

  • Lao names are romanised in different ways; the spelling on every document should match the passport
  • Ask the Lao office whether it accepts English documents or needs a Lao translation as well
  • An apostille is not accepted in Laos, so ask for attestation
  • Exporters: agree the list of documents with the buyer before shipping, since each one is legalised separately
FAQs

FAQs: Laos embassy attestation

Will Laos accept an MEA apostille?

No. Laos has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is not recognised there. The route is MEA attestation followed by legalisation at the Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in New Delhi. We complete both steps and send the document back to you.

What are the Laos embassy attestation fees?

For the MEA stage we charge Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per personal or educational document, including notary, SDM, the Rs 50 MEA fee and service. The Lao Embassy’s fee is extra and is confirmed in your written quote. Courier is separate.

I attended a training course in India. Can the certificate be legalised for Laos?

Send us a photo of it first. Many certificates issued by Indian institutes can go through notary, SDM and MEA attestation before the Lao Embassy stage, but some cannot, so we confirm whether yours qualifies before quoting and before you courier the original.

How long will Laos embassy attestation take?

Our estimate is 5 to 8 working days for the complete process after the documents reach our office, depending on the Lao Embassy’s workload and holidays. Add courier time both ways. We confirm the expected date in writing first.

Can trade documents be legalised for a buyer in Laos?

Yes. Commercial invoices, certificates of origin and company papers are certified by a Chamber of Commerce, attested by the MEA and then legalised by the Lao Embassy. We review the documents and send you a written quote covering every stage.

Do I need a Lao translation?

It depends on the office. Lao is the official language and some authorities want a translation after legalisation, while others work with English. INFINITYGRO translates into Lao and other languages, priced per page, once you know what is required.

Can someone pick up the documents from my house?

Home pickup is not part of our service. Courier the originals to our office in New Ashok Nagar, Delhi, or drop them off in person. Once done, we return them by Blue Dart or another secure courier, or you can collect them.

Can a birth certificate from India be legalised for Laos?

Yes. Birth and marriage certificates issued in India go through notary, SDM, MEA attestation and the Lao Embassy, just as degrees do. Check that names and dates match the passports before you send them, because a mismatch means correcting the certificate first.
