Quick answer

What is Afghanistan embassy attestation?

Afghanistan embassy attestation is the legalisation of an Indian document so that offices in Afghanistan accept it. Afghanistan has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention, so an MEA apostille is not enough: the document is attested by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and then stamped by the Embassy of Afghanistan in New Delhi.

Most of our Afghanistan files come from Afghan students who finished a degree at an Indian university and need it attested before going home, and from Indian exporters shipping medicines, food and machinery to Kabul. Personal and educational documents go through notary and SDM in Delhi first; commercial documents start at a Chamber of Commerce.

Part 1 · Apostille or attestation

Afghanistan needs embassy attestation, not an apostille

Afghanistan does not appear in the HCCH Apostille Convention status table (checked October 2026). An apostilled document is therefore not accepted there. The Indian document must carry the MEA attestation stamp, and the Afghan Embassy then legalises the MEA signature.
