Audit Report Apostille: How Company Financials Are Legalised for Use Abroad
Overseas tenders, foreign banks and partners setting up a joint company often ask for an Indian company’s audited accounts with an apostille. An audit report is longer and more complex than most commercial papers, so preparation matters. This guide covers which report to send, how to make it ready, the Chamber of Commerce and MEA stages, and the countries that need embassy legalisation instead.

Quick answer: audit report apostille
Audit report apostille is the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) apostille on an Indian company’s audited financial statements, usually the auditor’s report together with the balance sheet, profit and loss account and notes. It lets a bank, tender committee or authority in a Hague Convention country accept the accounts as a genuine Indian document. As a commercial paper, it is attested by a Chamber of Commerce before the MEA.
The apostille confirms signatures and seals, not the figures. It does not mean the MEA has reviewed your accounts. INFINITYGRO handles the Chamber and MEA stages in Delhi and quotes in writing once we see the report and know the country. For the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and other non-Hague countries, the route is MEA attestation plus embassy legalisation.
Who asks for apostilled audited accounts
Overseas tenders
Public and private tenders often require the bidder’s audited accounts for recent years, legalised for use in that country.
Subsidiaries and joint ventures
Registering a branch or company abroad can require the Indian parent’s financial statements.
Banks and credit checks
Foreign banks and trade-credit providers may ask for legalised accounts before opening an account or setting a credit limit.
Distributor and licence applications
Some regulators and principals abroad check the financial standing of an Indian partner.
Which audit report to send
Ask the foreign party exactly what it wants. The words audit report can mean different things to different offices.
| Statutory audit report with financial statements | The usual request; sent as one bound set |
|---|---|
| Tax audit report | Only if specifically asked; it serves a different purpose |
| Several financial years | Each year’s report is a separate document |
| Consolidated statements | Only if the receiver asks for group figures |
Reports signed by Indian chartered accountants carry a UDIN, a unique document number generated on the ICAI portal, along with the auditor’s membership number. Make sure both are visible on the copy you send.
Getting the audit report ready for apostille
- Use the signed copy from the auditor, not a printout of an unsigned PDF
- Keep every page in order and bind or staple the set securely
- Check the auditor’s signature, firm stamp, date and UDIN on the report
- Have a director initial the pages if the Chamber asks for it
- Add an authorisation letter on letterhead and a copy of the signatory’s ID

FAQs: Audit Report Apostille: How Company Financials Are Legalised for Use Abroad
What is audit report apostille?
It is the MEA apostille placed on an Indian company’s audited financial statements after Chamber of Commerce attestation. It lets a foreign bank, tender body or authority in a Hague Convention country accept the accounts as an authentic Indian document.
Does the apostille mean the MEA has checked my accounts?
No. The apostille authenticates the signatures and seals in the chain. It says nothing about the accuracy of the figures. That responsibility stays with the auditor and the company, and the foreign party judges the content itself.
Can I apostille a PDF of the audit report?
Not as a PDF. The Chamber and the MEA work on a signed paper document. Ask your auditor for a signed copy, or for a signed print of the final report, and send that to us.
Is a multi-page audit report one document?
Usually it is treated as one document when it is bound as a single set: the auditor’s report with the statements and notes. Tell us the page count when you send the photo so we can confirm before you courier it.
We need three years of accounts. Can they go together?
Yes. Each year’s report is a separate document, but they can travel in one courier and move through the Chamber and the MEA together. That is usually quicker than sending them one by one.
Our tender is in Qatar. Do we need an apostille?
No. Qatar is not a Hague Convention member. The audit report needs Chamber attestation, MEA attestation and then Qatar Embassy legalisation in New Delhi. The embassy fee is extra and shown separately in your written quote.
Who should sign the authorisation letter?
A director or another authorised signatory of the company, on company letterhead with the company stamp. It names the person sending the documents and lets us deal with the Chamber and the MEA on the company’s behalf.
How much does it cost?
Commercial documents, including audit reports, are quoted in writing after we see them, because the stages vary by country and document. The quote covers every stage; courier is extra and any embassy fee is shown separately.
