Documents for Bulgaria: Apostille Instead of Bulgarian Embassy Attestation
Many people preparing documents for Bulgaria search for Bulgarian Embassy attestation. For Indian documents that step is not needed. Bulgaria and India are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the MEA apostille is what Bulgarian offices expect. This guide explains the route, what it costs, and where the embassy in New Delhi still comes in.

Documents for Bulgaria apostille: quick answer
Documents for Bulgaria apostille is the right route for papers issued in India. The HCCH status table shows the Apostille Convention in force for Bulgaria since 29 April 2001 and for India since 14 July 2005, and Bulgaria is not among the states that objected to India’s accession. So an Indian degree, birth or marriage certificate, PCC or company paper carrying the MEA apostille needs no Bulgarian Embassy stamp.
INFINITYGRO handles personal and educational documents through the notary, SDM and MEA for Rs 1,000–1,500 per document, all-inclusive, usually in 2–3 working days. Commercial papers go through a Chamber of Commerce first and are quoted in writing. We also translate into Bulgarian when the receiving office asks.
Why the Bulgarian Embassy does not attest Indian documents
Under the Apostille Convention, a document from one member state is accepted in another once the issuing country’s competent authority has added an apostille. In India that authority is the Ministry of External Affairs. The convention removes the old chain of foreign ministry plus embassy legalisation between member states.
Because both countries are members and the convention applies between them, there is no separate Bulgarian Embassy attestation for an Indian document. If an agent offers one for an Indian paper, ask what exactly the embassy will stamp.

- Does the translation have to be made or certified in Bulgaria, or is a translation from India accepted?
- Should the translation be done after the apostille, so the apostille text is translated too?
INFINITYGRO translates into any language, including Bulgarian. If the office requires a translation certified inside Bulgaria, send the apostilled original and have it translated there.
When the Bulgarian Embassy in New Delhi is involved
Bulgaria’s foreign ministry lists the Embassy in New Delhi as covering India, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Its legalisation work concerns documents from countries outside the convention. For a Nepal-issued document, Bulgaria’s ministry describes a chain of Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the Embassy of Nepal in India, then the Bulgarian consular office in New Delhi.
Nepal and Sri Lanka documents
We handle the India-side embassy step only once the document is already legalised by that country’s foreign ministry. Send a photo first and we confirm whether we can help.
Bangladesh documents
Bangladesh joined the convention with effect from 30 March 2025, so ask the Bulgarian office whether a Bangladesh apostille is now enough. Send a photo first and we confirm whether we can help.
