General Affidavit Apostille and Attestation
MEA apostille and embassy attestation for general affidavits: name change, one and the same person, address, date of birth and other sworn declarations needed abroad.

General affidavit apostille: quick answer
General affidavit apostille is the stamp the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) puts on your Indian affidavit so that it is accepted in Hague Convention countries. On our route the affidavit is notarised in New Delhi, verified by the SDM office and then apostilled by the MEA, which charges a government fee of ₹50 per document.
For the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and other non-Hague countries the apostille is not accepted. There you need General affidavit attestation: notary, SDM, MEA attestation and then the embassy stamp.

Why an affidavit needs an apostille or attestation
Foreign authorities often ask for a sworn explanation when your documents do not match: a different spelling of your name, a surname added after marriage, two dates of birth or a changed address. In India such statements are made as affidavits on stamp paper before a notary.
To be used abroad, the affidavit is verified by the SDM in New Delhi and then apostilled by the MEA for Hague countries, or attested by the MEA and legalised by the embassy for the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and other non-Hague countries.
Name change
Spelling differences or a new surname.
One and the same person
Two names that belong to one person.
Address and residence
Proof of address declarations.
Date of birth
When records show different dates.

Tips before sending your affidavit
- Use the receiving authority’s wording if it gives one; affidavits drafted for Indian use may not answer the foreign question.
- The deponent’s name must match the passport; the affidavit explains other variations.
- For an unmarried or single status declaration, see our unmarried affidavit and single status pages.

FAQs: General affidavit apostille and attestation
How do I get my affidavit apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs?
Send us the original affidavit. We get it notarised in New Delhi, have the notary verified by the SDM office and submit it to the MEA, which fixes the apostille. The stamped affidavit comes back to you by tracked courier.
What are the charges for General affidavit apostille?
Two parts make up the cost: the MEA’s ₹50 government fee per document and our service charge, which for an apostille on a affidavit is usually ₹1,000–₹1,500 per document. Courier both ways is separate. If you need embassy attestation instead, we quote that country’s charges in writing.
Which affidavits can be apostilled?
Most sworn affidavits on stamp paper that are notarised in India can be apostilled or attested: name change, one and the same person, address, date of birth and similar declarations.
What documents are required for General affidavit attestation?
Only a few things: the original affidavit, a passport copy showing the photo and address pages, and our authorisation letter signed by you. Let us know the country and the purpose so we choose the right route.
What is the process for General affidavit attestation for the UAE, Qatar or Kuwait?
For these non-Hague countries the affidavit is notarised and verified by the SDM in New Delhi, attested by the MEA, and then legalised by the embassy of the destination country. For the UAE, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs adds a final stamp inside the UAE.
Can an affidavit made abroad be apostilled in India?
No. An affidavit executed abroad is legalised in that country or at the Indian embassy there. We handle affidavits executed in India.
How long does General affidavit apostille take?
An apostille is quicker than embassy attestation, because there is no embassy queue. The exact time depends on the SDM and MEA workload; your written quote gives an expected date, and WhatsApp updates follow each stage.
Apostille or attestation: which one does my affidavit need?
It depends on the country where you will use the affidavit. Hague Convention countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, Germany, Italy, the UK and Australia, accept the MEA apostille. Non-Hague countries, such as the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and China, need MEA attestation followed by embassy legalisation.
Do I need a new affidavit for each country?
Often yes, because wording and validity rules differ. Ask the receiving authority before drafting.
