France Embassy Attestation: Apostille Rules, Campus France and the Three-Month Birth Certificate
France embassy attestation has never been required in living memory. France ratified the Hague Apostille Convention with effect from 24 January 1965, making it one of the earliest parties anywhere, so an Indian document for Paris, Lyon or Toulouse carries one MEA apostille. Two French peculiarities decide most files, and neither is a stamp.
The first is Campus France, which Indian students must go through before a study visa. The second is the French rule that certain civil-status documents must be recently issued, which catches out people who apostille a birth certificate months in advance. INFINITYGRO handles the Notary, SDM and MEA stages from our Delhi office and gets the sequencing right.
- ✓France has accepted apostilles since 24 January 1965
- ✓No French consulate stamp is required on Indian documents
- ✓We time civil-status documents around the French recency rule
- ✓A written figure first; nothing moves until you agree it
In one paragraph: what France requires from India
Quick answer Last updated 8 October 2026
France accepts the Hague apostille, so France embassy attestation is not a separate stage. An Indian public document for France is notarised, attested by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Delhi and then given a numbered apostille by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Nothing afterwards goes to a France embassy or consulate.
- Hague Apostille Convention
- France is a contracting party
- Correct route from India
- Notary → Sub-Divisional Magistrate → MEA apostille
- Is an apostille accepted?
- Yes — it is the complete legalisation
- Is an embassy stamp needed?
- No — no France mission stamp is required
- Who issues the stamp
- Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India

France embassy attestation or an apostille: which does your document need?
France does not attest Indian documents at a consular counter. The Apostille Convention entered into force for France on 24 January 1965, so a numbered MEA apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi is the complete legalisation of an Indian public document for French use. France was among the first wave of parties and has never objected to India's accession, so the route has been clear throughout.
French administration adds two requirements of its own that have nothing to do with legalisation and everything to do with whether your file succeeds. One is language: French offices work in French and generally want a translation by a traducteur assermenté, a sworn translator registered with a French Court of Appeal. The other is recency: French civil-status practice treats certain documents as valid only if recently issued, because in France a birth certificate extract is reissued on demand rather than kept for life.
That second point is the source of the persistent myth that an apostille expires. It does not. The French rule applies to the underlying civil-status document, not to the stamp on it.
France's entry-into-force date is published in the HCCH status table for Convention No. 12. Recency and translation requirements are set by the French authority handling your file, so confirm both with them before you prepare anything.
The route an Indian document takes for France
Three stages inside India, finishing in New Delhi, after which France adds a sworn translation and, for students, the Campus France procedure. Sequencing matters more here than on most European files. That is all of France embassy attestation, start to finish.
Notary and SDM in Delhi, then the MEA apostille
The chain finishes at the Ministry. Nothing travels to a French consulate.
- Arranged by you
Campus France, for students, before the visa stage
Indian students go through the Etudes en France procedure, which includes an online file and an interview, before a study visa application is accepted. It runs on its own timetable and is arranged by you. The apostille is not a substitute for it and does not speed it up.

Notary Public and Sub-Divisional Magistrate attestation in Delhi
A Notary Public in Delhi enters and seals the document, then a Sub-Divisional Magistrate attests the notary's signature. This is the clearance the Ministry's apostille counter requires on a fast-track file, and it is handled end to end by us.

MEA apostille
The Ministry of External Affairs affixes a numbered apostille sticker with a QR code to the reverse of the document. For France that completes the legalisation. The sworn French translation is commissioned afterwards, over the apostilled document, never before it.
Typically needed for: Campus France and student visa files, Passeport Talent and work permits, family reunification, marriage at a French mairie, PACS, property and succession matters, and company registration.
Before you pay anybody for France embassy attestation, check this
French offices answer written questions properly, so ask two before you spend. First, how recently must the civil-status document have been issued, because for a mairie handling a marriage the answer is often a matter of months. Second, must the translation be by a traducteur assermenté registered with a Court of Appeal. Those two answers set your entire timetable.
Sorting your paperwork: three groups, three routes to France
There is no single process. There are three, and which one applies to you depends entirely on what kind of paper you are holding. Personal certificates, academic records and trade documents each take their own path up to the Ministry of External Affairs, where the chains finally converge. Work out your category first and the rest of France embassy attestation becomes simple.
Personal and non-educational records
These are civil-status and administrative records, and they are the quickest part of France embassy attestation because there is no university or board verification step lurking behind them.
What is in this group
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificate
- Single status certificate
- Police Clearance Certificate
- Medical certificate
- Divorce decree
- Name change deed
- Affidavit
- Succession certificate
- Adoption deed
The route
- Notary Public. The first signature on the chain. A Delhi Notary registers and seals the original document, which is what the magistrate's office verifies at the next stage.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- SDM, the fast-track option. Chosen over the issuing State's own department because it is quicker, happens in Delhi and satisfies the Ministry for nearly every destination.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- The State-level alternative. Some authorities accept only the issuing State's Home Department or Regional Attestation Centre. That stage happens in that State, costs what the department charges, and is yours to organise.Arranged by you
- MEA, New Delhi — the last Indian counter on a France file. The Ministry checks the stamp below against its specimen records and applies its sticker. Walk-in submission by individuals ended in 2012.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- Finished at the Ministry, for France. A numbered apostille sticker carrying a QR code is applied to the reverse, and that is the complete legalisation. France requires nothing further, so France embassy attestation means apostille work and nothing more.Final stage
Degrees, diplomas, marksheets and transcripts
This is the largest group by volume in France embassy attestation and the one with the most forks in the road, because the receiving institution in France decides whether the quick route or the long route applies to you.
What is in this group
- Degree certificate
- Marksheets
- Diploma certificate
- Provisional degree
- Transcripts
- ITI / trade certificate
- 10th certificate
- 12th certificate
- PhD certificate
- Course completion certificate
- School leaving certificate
- Migration certificate
The route
- Notary Public, in Delhi. A Notary enters the document in the register and applies a seal and signature. Nothing can move further up the chain without it.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- Attestation by an SDM. The magistrate certifies that the Notary who sealed your document is genuine. It is the fast lane through the State-level requirement and it happens in Delhi.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- Or: State HRD / Higher Education Department. Where the receiving institution demands it, the education department of the issuing State authenticates the certificate, usually after the university has verified it. This runs in that State, takes considerably longer, and is arranged and paid for by you.Arranged by you
- MEA, New Delhi — the last Indian counter on a France file.
Company, trade and export paperwork
Business documents are treated as the acts of a company rather than of a person, so in France embassy attestation the Chamber of Commerce replaces the Notary and SDM stages that personal and educational records use.
What is in this group
- Certificate of Incorporation
- Memorandum of Association (MOA)
- Articles of Association (AOA)
- Board Resolution
- Commercial invoice
- Certificate of Origin
- Packing list
- Power of Attorney
- Distribution agreement
- Memorandum of Understanding
- Free Sale Certificate
- GMP certificate
- Price list
- Bill of Lading
- Trade licence
- Partnership deed
- Certificate of Analysis
- Letter of Authority
- Company registration certificate
- Export documents
The route
- Chamber attestation. Company standing is verified and the document sealed by a recognised Chamber of Commerce. This single stage does the work that Notary and SDM do for personal documents.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- The Ministry of External Affairs. Every France document passes through here. MEA authenticates the preceding signature and affixes its numbered sticker; since 2012 only registered agencies may submit.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- Finished at the Ministry, for France. A numbered apostille sticker carrying a QR code is applied to the reverse, and that is the complete legalisation. France requires nothing further, so France embassy attestation means apostille work and nothing more.Final stage
Classification is free to check and expensive to get wrong. Send a photograph of the document and you will be told which of the three chains it belongs in, what each stage costs, and which stages are yours rather than ours.
What each certificate needs for France embassy attestation
French requirements follow the visa or civil procedure rather than the document type, and the translation rule reaches nearly all of them. France embassy attestation is the phrase in the search box; an apostille is the real requirement. Each one is handled the same way in France embassy attestation terms, but the body asking for it differs.
Degree certificate apostille for France
A degree certificate apostille for France is needed for university admission through Campus France, for the Passeport Talent routes tied to a qualification, and for professional recognition. The apostille goes on the original and transcripts travel with it, because French admission is assessed on programme content.
Campus France and TalentDiploma, ITI and trade certificates
Polytechnic diplomas, ITI trade certificates and vocational qualifications take the same apostille route. French recognition of a foreign vocational qualification is handled by the national information centre for academic recognition, and the course-content record matters more than the certificate.
Technical qualificationsBirth certificate apostille for France
A birth certificate apostille for France is the document the recency rule bites hardest on. For marriage at a mairie and for several civil procedures, French practice expects a recently issued extract, because French birth records are reissued on demand. Obtain a fresh registrar's copy close to your filing date rather than using one issued years ago.
Mairie and civil statusMarriage certificate apostille for France
A marriage certificate apostille for France is required for family reunification, for spouse visas and for transcription of a foreign marriage into French records. The registrar's certificate is the document that counts, not a ceremony record, and a sworn French translation is almost always required with it.
Family reunificationPolice Clearance Certificate
An Indian Police Clearance Certificate appears in several French residence routes and in regulated employment. It is apostilled on the same chain and is treated as recent-dated, so obtain it towards the end of your preparation rather than at the start.
PCCCommercial and company documents
Invoices, certificates of origin, board resolutions, MOA and AOA and powers of attorney need a Chamber of Commerce stage before the Ministry. French company registration, commercial court filings and notarial property transactions are the usual destinations, all requiring a sworn French translation.
Chamber of Commerce firstWhere the money goes in France embassy attestation
France embassy attestation fees are not a real category, because no French consular charge arises on an Indian document. What a French file actually costs is driven by the following.
1No consular stage
A French file ends at the Ministry in New Delhi. No foreign mission fee enters the quote at all, which puts France among the cheaper destinations on the Indian side.
2Sworn French translation
Normally the largest single cost and entirely outside our quote. A traducteur assermenté is registered with a French Court of Appeal, charges French rates and usually prices per page.
3Re-issuing civil-status documents for the recency rule
Often the hidden cost of a French marriage or family file. Obtaining a fresh registrar's extract is paid to the Indian issuing authority, and poor sequencing means paying for the apostille twice as well.
4Campus France and recognition
Each has its own fee and timetable, arranged by you. Neither is attestation and neither can be shortened by having documents apostilled earlier.
5Documents per file, courier and urgency
Several documents moving together cost less than the same documents sent one at a time, tracked courier from outside Delhi adds to the total, and a genuine deadline is priced differently from a routine file.
For the full breakdown see the degree certificate apostille and attestation fees page; trade and polytechnic qualifications are on the diploma certificate fees page. Written quotes come back the same day on WhatsApp.
France embassy attestation: the recency rule, and why it is not an expiring apostille
The single most useful thing this page can give you has nothing to do with France embassy attestation. It is a correct understanding of the three-month idea, which is garbled everywhere and costs people real money.
An apostille never expires. Nothing in the Convention imposes a validity period, and no Indian authority sets one. An apostille applied in January is just as valid in December.
But a French civil-status document is expected to be fresh. In France, an extract from the civil register is not a keepsake; it is reissued whenever it is needed, and French offices are used to receiving one issued days or weeks earlier. When a mairie or a prefecture asks for a recent birth certificate, it is applying that domestic habit to your Indian document. The limit sits on the certificate, not on the apostille attached to it.
What that means in practice. If you are marrying at a mairie, do not apostille your birth certificate eight months before the wedding. Fix the date the file is due, obtain a freshly issued registrar's certificate close to it, apostille that, and then have it translated. Doing it in the other order means doing it twice.
Which documents are affected. Birth certificates most of all, then marriage certificates, single-status certificates and police clearance certificates. Degrees, diplomas and transcripts are not affected at all, because the date of award is historical and cannot be refreshed. So apostille the academic documents early and set them aside.
The translator must usually be French-appointed. A traducteur assermenté is sworn before a French Court of Appeal, and French offices commonly refuse translations certified in India. Apostille here, translate there, and have the apostille text translated along with the document so the French version covers the final stamp.
Students: Campus France first. The Etudes en France procedure sits in front of the visa for Indian applicants and runs on its own clock. Start it early and treat the apostille as the quick administrative task it is.
Send us your filing date along with the list you were given, and you will get a sequence rather than just a quotation.
What a France embassy attestation quote does not cover
Every service has a boundary, and the boundary of France embassy attestation is worth stating before you commit.
Beyond our remit
- Genuineness checks at the university. Where a receiving body wants the institution to confirm the award, that request is yours to make.
- State-level HRD and home department stages. These happen in the issuing State, on their timetable, and you pay them directly.
- Sworn French translation, Campus France and recognition filings. Court-appointed translators are sworn in France and those procedures run there.
- Immigration and application charges. Paid by you to whichever office is handling the application itself.
- Lost, torn or laminated originals. A replacement has to come from the issuing authority before anything else can start.
INFINITYGRO facilitates; it does not decide. Statutory stages cannot be skipped by anyone, and the outcome rests with the Ministry and the receiving authority.
The set that starts the work
Once you know an apostille is what France needs, this is the set that starts the Indian stages. With these, France embassy attestation can start the same day.
- ✓The original document, flat, unlaminated and undamaged
- ✓Your intended filing or ceremony date, so the recency-limited documents can be timed properly
- ✓Transcripts or programme records, where admission or recognition requires them
- ✓The written requirement from the French office, including the recency and translation clauses
- ✓A passport copy, photo page and address page
- ✓The signed authorisation letter and a return address, unless you are collecting

This mission does not attest or legalise Indian documents. Because France is an Apostille Convention country, the apostille is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi and the chain ends there. We publish these details because people ask for them, and they are useful for visa and other consular enquiries — but do not take your documents here expecting a stamp.
Questions we are asked about France embassy attestation
What people actually ring up and ask about France embassy attestation.
Do I need French embassy attestation in India?
No. France ratified the Hague Apostille Convention with effect from 24 January 1965 and never objected to India's accession, so an MEA apostille from New Delhi is the complete legalisation of an Indian public document for France. Nothing goes to a French consulate. A quotation containing a French consular legalisation charge should be questioned.
Is it true that an apostille for France is only valid for three months?
No. An apostille has no expiry date whatsoever. What is true is that French civil-status practice expects certain underlying documents, particularly birth certificates, to have been issued recently, because in France those extracts are reissued on demand rather than kept for life. The limit applies to the certificate, not to the stamp on it.
Which documents does the French recency rule affect?
Birth certificates most of all, then marriage certificates, single-status certificates and police clearance certificates. Degrees, diplomas and transcripts are not affected, because the date of award is fixed in the past and cannot be refreshed. Apostille the academic set early and leave the civil-status documents until close to your filing date.
I am marrying at a mairie in France. What should I do first?
Ask the mairie in writing how recently the birth certificate must have been issued and who they accept as translator, because mairies differ. Then work backwards: obtain a fresh registrar's certificate close to the date, apostille it, and have it translated by a traducteur assermenté. Apostilling an old certificate months ahead is the commonest and most expensive mistake on French marriage files, and no amount of France embassy attestation will repair it.
Can my translation be done in India?
Usually not acceptably. French authorities generally require a traducteur assermenté, a translator sworn before a French Court of Appeal, who certifies the translation and attaches it to the source document. A translation certified in India is commonly refused. Apostille the document in India, then have the sworn translation done in France over the apostilled version.
What is Campus France and do I need it?
Indian students go through the Etudes en France procedure before a study visa application is accepted. It involves an online file and an interview and it runs on its own timetable. It is not attestation, we do not provide it, and no apostille shortens it. Start it well before your intake deadlines and treat France embassy attestation, which means the apostille, as the quick part.
What do France embassy attestation fees come to?
There is no French mission charge, so the quote covers the Ministry's statutory charge per document, the Notary and SDM stages, our handling and the courier. The sworn French translation is separate and is usually the larger number on the whole file. Send a photograph of the documents for a written quote before anything starts.
Does an Indian apostille work in French overseas departments?
Ask the receiving office rather than relying on a general answer. The Convention applies to France, but administrative practice in the overseas departments and collectivities can differ in detail, and the sensible course is to get the requirement confirmed in writing by the specific office handling your file before you prepare anything.
Do I send originals or certified copies to be apostilled?
Originals. The apostille is applied to the original public document, not to a photocopy. Send the certificate flat and unlaminated, because a laminated document cannot take the sticker and comes back unprocessed. If you must retain an original in India, tell us first and we will say whether a certified copy route exists for that document type.
What does a French work permit file need from the Indian side?
Usually the apostilled degree or professional qualification with transcripts, an apostilled police clearance certificate where the role requires it, and civil-status documents if family are accompanying. Each is then translated by a sworn translator in France. Obtain the police certificate last, since it is the time-sensitive one.
What about commercial documents for a French company?
They take the commercial chain: a Chamber of Commerce attestation, then the Ministry of External Affairs, then the apostille. Commercial documents do not pass through a Notary or an SDM. French company registration, commercial court filings and notarial property transactions all require a sworn French translation, and a covering letter on company letterhead should travel with the set.
