An apostille for Italy is the MEA apostille placed on an Indian document after verification by the issuing authority – education department, home department, SDM or chamber of commerce. Italian universities, consulates, prefetture and comuni accept it without Italian Embassy legalisation. Most Italian offices then need an Italian translation, sometimes certified by the consulate or sworn in Italy.

Because India and Italy are both parties to the 1961 Apostille Convention, Indian public documents do not need legalisation by the Italian Embassy or consulates. The final stamp is the MEA apostille, verifiable online through its QR code.
What Italian offices still decide for themselves is the translation: some accept a translation made in India, some want it certified as conforming by the Italian consulate, and some require a sworn translation (traduzione asseverata) done in Italy. We check your office’s rule first.
