Bachelorhood certificate apostille: quick answer
Bachelorhood certificate apostille is the MEA apostille on an Indian document that states you have never been married. It may be a certificate from a local revenue office or an affidavit sworn on stamp paper. A marriage registrar or immigration office in a Hague Convention country accepts it once the MEA sticker is on it, without any embassy stamp.
INFINITYGRO handles the notary, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and MEA stages in Delhi for Rs 1,000–1,500 per document, all-inclusive, in about 2–3 working days; courier is extra. For the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait or China the route is MEA attestation and embassy legalisation, which is covered on our bachelorhood certificate attestation page.
Bachelorhood certificate, unmarried affidavit or single status: which one?
Indian law has no single nationwide “bachelorhood certificate”. What people hold depends on their state and on what the foreign office asked for. All of these can be apostilled once they are in proper form.
Certificate from a revenue office
Some SDM or tehsildar offices issue a certificate that a resident is unmarried, after a local inquiry.
Unmarried affidavit
A sworn statement on stamp paper by you, or by a parent, that you have never married. It must be notarised.
Single status certificate
A wider term used abroad. It can also cover divorced or widowed applicants, with the decree or death certificate attached.
If you are divorced or widowed, the receiving office will usually want the divorce decree or the spouse’s death certificate too. See the related pages below.
What the receiving registrar looks for
Include in the document
- Your full name exactly as in your passport
- Father’s name, date of birth and permanent address
- Passport number, where the receiver asks for it
- A clear statement that you have never been married
- Signature of the deponent or issuing officer, with date
Avoid these problems
- A date many months old: registrars often want it recent
- Spelling that differs from the passport
- An affidavit that is not notarised
- Stamp paper of a state different from your address, if the receiver objects
- Missing pages of a multi-page affidavit

Where the apostille is accepted
Apostille is enough
Hague Convention members such as Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Bulgaria, South Korea and Ecuador.
Attestation instead
The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt are not members, and China is a member with which India does not use the apostille. These need MEA attestation and embassy legalisation.
You can confirm any country on the HCCH status table.
Other papers in a marriage-abroad file
Registrars abroad usually ask for proof of identity, birth and status together. Send them in one courier so they are apostilled in the same batch.

FAQs: Bachelorhood Certificate Apostille from MEA
What is a bachelorhood certificate?
It is a document stating that a person has never been married. In India it is either issued by a local revenue office, such as the SDM or tehsildar, or made as a sworn affidavit on stamp paper. Foreign registrars use it before a marriage.
How much does bachelorhood certificate apostille cost?
Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, all-inclusive. That covers the notary, the SDM attestation, the Rs 50 MEA fee and our service. Courier both ways is extra, and translation is quoted by language.
How long does it take?
About 2 to 3 working days in Delhi once the original reaches us. Allow courier time if you send it from outside Delhi, and plan around your marriage date because registrars abroad may also need time to check papers.
Can an affidavit be apostilled instead of a certificate?
Yes, if the receiving office accepts an affidavit. The affidavit must be on stamp paper, signed by the deponent and notarised. It is then attested by the SDM and apostilled by the MEA like any personal document.
Can my parents sign the affidavit?
Many receivers accept an affidavit sworn by a parent that their son or daughter is unmarried. Some insist on one sworn by the applicant. Read the receiver’s instructions; if they are unclear, send us a photo and we will help you check.
Can you make the bachelorhood certificate for me?
No. INFINITYGRO does not issue certificates or decide anyone’s marital status. Get the certificate from your local office, or swear the affidavit before a notary, and then send it to us for the apostille.
I am marrying in Dubai. Is an apostille enough?
No. The UAE is not part of the Apostille Convention. The document needs MEA attestation, UAE Embassy legalisation in New Delhi and UAE MOFA attestation online. Our bachelorhood certificate attestation page explains that route, which usually takes 5 to 7 working days.
How recent should the document be?
The apostille itself does not expire, but marriage registrars often want proof of single status that is only a few months old. Check the registrar’s rule and get the certificate or affidavit made close to the date you send it.
