What Is Medical Certificate Apostille? A Plain Explanation
A visa officer, employer or university abroad has asked for an apostilled medical certificate, and you want to know what that actually means before you send anything. This explainer covers what the apostille confirms, what it does not say about your health, which medical papers qualify, and how it differs from apostille on a medical degree.

Quick answer: the meaning in short
What is medical certificate apostille? It is a sticker placed on an Indian medical certificate by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) under the Hague Apostille Convention. It tells an authority in another member country that the Indian signatures and seals on the paper have been checked. Because a doctor’s certificate is a private document, a notary and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) authenticate it first, and the MEA apostille follows.
The apostille does not say that you are fit, vaccinated or ill. It certifies where the document came from, not what it says about your health. The receiving office still reads the medical content and decides on it. INFINITYGRO handles all three stages in Delhi for Rs 1,000–1,500 per document all-inclusive, usually in 2–3 working days.
Why a foreign office asks for an apostille at all
An officer in Madrid or Seoul cannot tell whether a stamp from a clinic in Lucknow is genuine. Under the Apostille Convention, countries agreed on a single certificate that answers that question, so the officer does not need to contact India. In India, the MEA issues it.
The apostille sits at the end of a chain. The doctor signs the certificate, a notary attests it, the SDM authenticates the notary, and the MEA confirms the SDM’s signature. Each link checks the one before it.
What is medical certificate apostille proof of, and what is it not?
It confirms
- The authenticity of the Indian signature and seal it relates to
- The capacity of the official who signed
- That the paper went through the recognised Indian chain
It does not confirm
- Your diagnosis, fitness or test results
- That the doctor examined you properly
- That the receiving office must accept the certificate
Medical papers that can be apostilled
Fitness certificates
Issued by a registered doctor for a job, study place or sports registration abroad.
Vaccination records
Certificates of immunisation for students and families moving abroad.
Disability certificates
Certificates from a medical authority, used for benefits or school support in another country.
Medical reports
Signed test results or summaries from a hospital, usually for treatment or insurance abroad.
In every case the paper needs a doctor’s or hospital’s signature and stamp, the patient’s full name as in the passport, and a date. An unsigned laboratory printout is unlikely to pass the notary stage.
Medical certificate or medical degree?
Doctors and nurses moving abroad sometimes mean their qualification, not a health certificate. An MBBS, MD or nursing degree is an educational document, and a different page covers it. Both follow the notary, SDM and MEA route and cost the same per document, but the checks before submission differ.

FAQs: What Is Medical Certificate Apostille? A Plain Explanation
What is medical certificate apostille in simple words?
It is the MEA’s sticker confirming that the Indian signatures and seals on your medical certificate are genuine. A foreign office in a Hague Convention country then accepts the paper as an authentic Indian document without asking its own embassy to check it.
Does the apostille make my certificate medically valid abroad?
No. The apostille only authenticates the document. Whether a foreign office accepts the doctor’s findings, or wants its own medical test, depends on its own rules. Many visa systems, for example, use their own panel doctors.
Can a certificate from a private clinic be apostilled?
Yes, if it is signed and stamped by a registered doctor and carries your full name and a date. It goes through the notary and SDM stages before the MEA, which is how private documents become eligible for the apostille.
Who issues the apostille in India?
The Ministry of External Affairs. It issues apostilles through its outsourced collection centres after the earlier authentication is complete. INFINITYGRO is a private facilitation service; we take your document through each stage but do not issue the apostille ourselves.
Is a medical certificate apostille the same as attestation?
No. The apostille is for Hague Convention countries and ends at the MEA. Attestation is for countries outside the Convention, such as the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, and adds embassy legalisation after the MEA stage.
Can a report with several pages be apostilled?
Usually the signed summary or certificate page is what gets apostilled. A long report can be treated as one document if it is bound and signed, but tell us the page count first so we can confirm how it will be handled.
How long is an apostilled medical certificate accepted?
The apostille has no expiry, but medical certificates go out of date quickly. Many offices want a certificate issued within the last few months. Check the receiving office’s rule before getting an older certificate apostilled.
What does it cost?
Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per document, all-inclusive of notary, SDM attestation, the Rs 50 MEA fee and our service. Courier is extra both ways, and translation, if needed, is quoted by language and page.
