Diploma certificate attestation for China is the legalisation of an Indian diploma, such as a three-year polytechnic diploma from a state technical board or a postgraduate diploma from a university or institute, so that an employer or school in China can rely on it. Because India objected to China’s accession to the Apostille Convention, an apostille will not do.
The diploma is notarised and attested by the SDM in Delhi, attested by the MEA, then legalised by the Chinese Embassy or a Consulate General. Whether a diploma meets the requirements of a particular Chinese work permit or course is decided in China, so confirm that with your employer or school first. Points to check on a diploma before attestation
- The board or university name and seal are printed clearly
- Your name matches the passport, including initials
- It is the final diploma, not a provisional certificate or result sheet
- The year of passing and the course title are legible
- Not laminated, taped or cut down in size
A diploma from a private institute affiliated to a board should carry the board’s certificate or seal. A certificate issued only by a private training centre may not be accepted at the attestation stages; send us a photo and we will tell you.

Is a polytechnic diploma accepted in China?
That depends on the job or course and is decided in China. The attestation route in India is the same as for a degree. Ask your employer whether a diploma meets the work permit category before you start, so you do not legalise a paper that will not be used.
Can I apostille my diploma for China?
No. China joined the Apostille Convention in 2023, but India objected to its accession, so the apostille is not used between them. Diploma certificate attestation for China needs MEA attestation and then Chinese Embassy or Consulate legalisation.
Do I need my marksheets attested too?
Only if the Chinese employer or school asks for them. Many ask only for the final diploma. If marksheets are on the checklist, send them in the same courier so they are processed together and quoted per document.
My diploma is from an institute that has closed. Can it still be attested?
Possibly, if it is an original with the board or university seal. The attesting authorities look at the document, not the institute’s current status, but they may refuse something they cannot treat as genuine. Send a photo first.
Can you get my diploma verified by the state board?

Do I need a Chinese translation?
Some Chinese offices want sealed Chinese translations of non-Chinese documents; Nanjing’s work permit FAQ says so, for example. Ask your employer where it should be done. INFINITYGRO translates into Chinese if it is needed from India.
