The Uniform Civil Code and your marriage certificate
On 27 January 2025 Uttarakhand became the first state to bring a Uniform Civil Code into force. Marriage registration is now compulsory under the UCC and is done through the state's online UCC portal, which issues a certificate with a registration number.
Couples who married earlier hold certificates issued under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act or local registration rules. Those certificates remain valid; there is no need to re-register before an apostille unless a foreign authority specifically asks for a UCC record.
For MEA, what matters is a genuine signed certificate – a digitally signed UCC certificate or an older certificate with the registrar's seal and signature.
Married before 2025? Your older certificate is still valid for the apostille. Some couples choose to register under the UCC as well – useful, but not required for MEA.
