Registration in Himachal

The 1996 Act – how Himachal registers marriages

Himachal was one of the earlier states to make registration compulsory through the Himachal Pradesh Registration of Marriages Act, 1996. In most villages the panchayat secretary acts as the Registrar of Marriages, while in towns such as Shimla, Mandi and Solan the municipal body does the job.

The certificate is usually in Hindi, with the registrar's seal and signature. MEA apostilles it as issued; the only extra step some couples need is an English translation for the destination country.

Court marriages and inter-faith marriages registered under the Special Marriage Act by the district Marriage Officer are apostilled in the same way.
