Anand Karaj, court marriage or registrar – what your Punjab certificate is

Punjab made registration compulsory through the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2012. Sikh couples married by Anand Karaj can also register under the Anand Marriage Act, and many NRI couples choose a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act when one partner is a foreign citizen.

All of these produce a government certificate signed and sealed by the registrar or Marriage Officer – and all of them can be apostilled. What cannot be apostilled on its own is a certificate issued only by a gurdwara or temple committee; it has to be followed by government registration.

Punjab certificates may be in Punjabi (Gurmukhi), English or both. MEA apostilles them as issued; whether you need a translation depends on the destination.
