Registration in J&K

Tehsil, municipality or Nikah register – the J&K certificate MEA accepts

Marriages in Jammu and Kashmir are recorded by registrars at the tehsil or municipal level. Muslim marriages are registered under the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Marriages Registration Act, 1981, while Hindu and Sikh marriages and court marriages follow the central Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriage Act.

Many J&K certificates are handwritten, often in Urdu, with the registrar's seal and signature. MEA apostilles them exactly as they are; it needs a genuine registrar's seal and signature, not a particular language or format.

A frequent question is whether certificates issued before the 2019 reorganisation still work. They do. A certificate issued by the competent registrar at the time remains a valid document and is apostilled normally.

Spelling check: Mohd on the certificate and Mohammad in the passport, or a father's name spelt two ways, is the most common reason a visa officer later queries a J&K certificate. Compare both before you post anything.
