Denmark Embassy Attestation: Apostille Rules, SIRI Files and Why English Is Usually Enough

Denmark embassy attestation is not a stage in any Danish application. The Hague Apostille Convention came into force for Denmark on 29 December 2006, so an Indian document for Copenhagen, Aarhus or Odense carries one MEA apostille and nothing else. The genuinely good news, which almost nobody tells Indian applicants, is that Denmark normally accepts documents in English.

That single fact makes a Danish file cheaper than a Croatian, Czech or Spanish-speaking one, because there is usually no sworn translation to pay for. INFINITYGRO handles the Notary, SDM and MEA stages from our Delhi office and tells you what SIRI and the Danish universities actually want alongside the apostille.

  • Denmark has accepted apostilles since 29 December 2006
  • No Danish embassy stamp is required on Indian documents
  • English is normally accepted, so no sworn translation in most files
  • Quoted in writing before anything reaches a counter

Does a document for Denmark need Denmark embassy attestation or an apostille?

Quick answer Last updated 8 October 2026

Denmark accepts the Hague apostille, so Denmark embassy attestation is not a separate stage. An Indian public document for Denmark is notarised, attested by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Delhi and then given a numbered apostille by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Nothing afterwards goes to a Denmark embassy or consulate.

Apostille or Denmark embassy attestation? What Denmark expects

Apostille country — no embassy stamp needed

Denmark does not attest Indian documents at a consular counter. The Apostille Convention entered into force for Denmark on 29 December 2006, so a numbered MEA apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi is the complete and final legalisation of an Indian public document for Danish use.

Denmark came to the Convention comparatively late for a western European state, which is why a handful of very old guides still describe a Danish consular route. That route closed almost twenty years ago. In the other direction, a Danish document coming to India is apostilled by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the two processes mirror one another.

One sensible precaution: if your document is destined for Greenland or the Faroe Islands rather than mainland Denmark, ask the receiving authority to confirm what they require, because the two self-governing territories have their own administrative arrangements and a general answer about Denmark is not a safe substitute for their own.

Denmark's entry-into-force date is published in the HCCH status table for Convention No. 12. Danish authorities set their own documentary and language requirements, so confirm those with the office handling your case.

The route an Indian document takes for Denmark

Three stages, all of them inside India and the last in New Delhi. Because Denmark normally reads English, there is usually nothing to add on the Danish side beyond submitting the apostilled original. That is Denmark embassy attestation in full, with nothing left out.

Apostille route

Notary and SDM in Delhi, then the MEA apostille

The chain finishes at the Ministry. Nothing goes to a Danish mission.

  1. Arranged by you

Credential assessment, where the Danish body asks for it

Danish universities and some regulated professions use the national assessment of foreign qualifications rather than deciding for themselves. It runs on its own timetable, it is arranged by you, and it is independent of the apostille. Start the enquiry before the paperwork.

  2. Handled by INFINITYGRO

Notary Public and Sub-Divisional Magistrate attestation in Delhi

A Notary Public in Delhi enters and seals the document, then a Sub-Divisional Magistrate attests the notary's signature. This is the clearance the Ministry's apostille counter requires on a fast-track file, and we handle it end to end.

  3. Handled by INFINITYGRO

    MEA apostille

The Ministry of External Affairs affixes a numbered apostille sticker with a QR code to the reverse of the document. For Denmark that is the complete chain. In most Danish files nothing further is needed, because the receiving office reads English.

Typically needed for: Danish residence and work permits handled by SIRI, university admission and credential assessment, family reunification, marriage and civil registration, company registration and powers of attorney.

Check the Denmark embassy attestation requirement before you pay anyone

Danish administration is unusually clear and it publishes what it wants, which makes this easy if you ask first. Put two questions in writing to the receiving office: do you need the apostilled original or will a certified copy do, and will you accept the document in English. In most cases the second answer is yes, and that saves you a translator's fee.

Which of the three document families is yours?

The quickest way to understand Denmark embassy attestation is to stop thinking about countries and start thinking about categories. India processes three document families along three different chains, and the stages are not swappable between them. Below is each family, what it contains, and exactly who does what at every step.

1. Personal documents

Personal and non-educational records

Personal records are the most common category in Denmark embassy attestation work, and the commonest reason one is rejected is that somebody sent a photocopy, a laminated certificate or a hospital slip instead of the registrar's original.

What is in this group

  • Police Clearance Certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Affidavit
  • Single status certificate
  • Medical certificate
  • Divorce decree
  • Name change deed
  • Death certificate
  • Personal Power of Attorney

The route

  1. Notary Public attestation. The document is presented to a Notary in Delhi, recorded in the notarial register and sealed. This is the foundation every later stage is checked against.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  2. The magistrate's stage. A Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Delhi attests the notary's signature, which is what the Ministry's counter checks against its specimen records.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  3. The State-level alternative. Some authorities accept only the issuing State's Home Department or Regional Attestation Centre. That stage happens in that State, costs what the department charges, and is yours to organise.Arranged by you
  4. The MEA sticker. Applied in New Delhi once the Ministry has verified the stamp beneath it. Nothing reaches Denmark without it, and since 2012 the Ministry has taken files only from registered agencies.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  5. For Denmark the apostille is the end of the road. The Ministry's numbered sticker with a QR code is applied and the document is complete. No Denmark mission stamp exists or is needed, which is what Denmark embassy attestation really amounts to.Final stage
2. Educational documents

Degrees, diplomas, marksheets and transcripts

Academic documents, and the family most people mean when they ask about Denmark embassy attestation. The processing is simple; the uncertainty is entirely about whether the receiving body in Denmark wants the short route or the long one.

What is in this group

  • Degree certificate
  • Diploma certificate
  • Transcripts
  • Marksheets
  • 12th certificate
  • 10th certificate
  • Provisional degree
  • Nursing certificate
  • ITI / trade certificate
  • Migration certificate
  • Bonafide certificate
  • Character certificate

The route

  1. The notarial stage. A Delhi Notary inspects the original, makes the register entry and applies the seal. Everything above it in the chain rests on this one signature.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  2. SDM stage. A Sub-Divisional Magistrate attests the notarisation. For the great majority of files this satisfies the State-level requirement and the document goes straight on to the Ministry.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  3. State Higher Education Department, if named. A minority of institutions require it, almost always with university verification before it. Both stages happen in the issuing State and both are arranged by you.Arranged by you
  4. Ministry of External Affairs stage. The seal beneath is matched to MEA's records and the Ministry's own sticker applied. Documents for Denmark cannot skip it, and since 2012 it has been lodged through an agency rather than over the counter.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  5. For Denmark the apostille is the end of the road. The Ministry's numbered sticker with a QR code is applied and the document is complete. No Denmark mission stamp exists or is needed, which is what Denmark embassy attestation really amounts to.Final stage
3. Commercial documents

Company, trade and export paperwork

Documents a business issues rather than a person. In Denmark embassy attestation these bypass the civil administration completely, which is why a commercial file is quicker and why it cannot be processed alongside personal documents.

What is in this group

  • Certificate of Origin
  • Commercial invoice
  • Free Sale Certificate
  • GMP certificate
  • Certificate of Analysis
  • Packing list
  • Bill of Lading
  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Memorandum of Association (MOA)
  • Articles of Association (AOA)
  • Board Resolution
  • Power of Attorney
  • Distribution agreement
  • Agency agreement
  • Price list
  • Trade licence
  • Export documents
  • Letter of Authority
  • Partnership deed
  • GST registration certificate

The route

  1. Chamber of Commerce attestation. A recognised Chamber of Commerce verifies the company and attests the document. This replaces the Notary and SDM stages entirely; commercial papers never go to a magistrate.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  2. Ministry stage, New Delhi. MEA satisfies itself the previous seal is genuine, then applies its own. This is the stage that makes the document usable in Denmark, and it is lodged through a registered agency.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  3. For Denmark the apostille is the end of the road. The Ministry's numbered sticker with a QR code is applied and the document is complete. No Denmark mission stamp exists or is needed, which is what Denmark embassy attestation really amounts to.Final stage

Before anything is stamped, be certain which of the three groups your document sits in. A Denmark file that starts in the wrong chain cannot be rescued at a later counter; it begins again, and the money already spent is gone.

Taken one document at a time

Danish requirements follow the permit or admission route rather than the document type, and English-language originals are accepted far more widely than in most of Europe. Denmark embassy attestation is the phrase people search for; an apostille is what each of these actually needs. The Denmark embassy attestation chain is common to all of them; what changes is who is asking and why.

Degree certificate apostille for Denmark

A degree certificate apostille for Denmark is needed for university admission, for assessment of a foreign qualification, and for work permit routes where the job requires a specific education level. The apostille goes on the original degree and the transcript usually travels with it, because assessment is done on course content.

Assessment and work permits

Diploma, ITI and trade certificates

Polytechnic diplomas, ITI trade certificates and vocational qualifications take the same apostille route. Danish skilled-trade recognition is handled separately from academic assessment, and the course-content record matters more than the certificate itself.

Technical qualifications

Birth certificate apostille for Denmark

A birth certificate apostille for Denmark comes up in family reunification, dependant residence and registration with the Danish civil registration system. Use the municipal registrar's certificate rather than a hospital record, and keep the spelling of names identical to the passport.

Family reunification

Marriage certificate apostille for Denmark

A marriage certificate apostille for Denmark is required for spouse-based residence, for registering a foreign marriage and for family reunification files. The registrar's certificate is the document that counts; a ceremony record from a temple, church or gurdwara is not a public document in the required sense.

Spouse residence

Police Clearance Certificate

An Indian Police Clearance Certificate appears in several Danish residence routes and in employer due-diligence checks. It is apostilled on the same chain, and because Danish offices treat it as recent-dated, obtain it towards the end of your preparation rather than at the start.

PCC

Commercial and company documents

Invoices, certificates of origin, board resolutions, MOA and AOA and powers of attorney need a Chamber of Commerce stage before the Ministry. Danish company registration and EU-facing trade documentation are the usual destinations, and English is standard in Danish commercial practice.

Chamber of Commerce first

Denmark embassy attestation fees: what makes the number move

Denmark embassy attestation fees do not exist as a category, because no Danish mission charge arises. A Danish file is in fact one of the cheapest European destinations we handle, and here is why.

1No mission stage

A Danish file ends at the Ministry in New Delhi. No foreign mission fee enters the quote at all, unlike a Dubai, Qatar or Kuwait file where the mission charge is often the largest line.

2Usually no translation either

This is what makes Denmark cheaper than most of Europe. Danish authorities commonly accept English, so the sworn-translator cost that dominates Croatian, Czech and Spanish-speaking files frequently does not arise.

3Whether a credential assessment is required

Where a Danish university or regulated profession requires formal assessment of your qualification, that is a Danish process with its own fee and timetable, arranged by you.

4Whether a State authentication is demanded

If a Danish body insists on State HRD authentication before the Ministry, that is a separate process you arrange and pay for directly, and it adds weeks.

5Documents per file, courier and urgency

Several documents moving together cost less than the same documents sent one at a time, tracked courier from outside Delhi adds to the total, and a genuine deadline is priced differently from a routine file.

Both the degree certificate fees page and the diploma certificate fees page set the charges out stage by stage. For your particular set, a photograph on WhatsApp brings a written quote back.

Denmark embassy attestation: the language rule that saves Indian applicants money

Most pages about European attestation warn you about translation. This one tells you when you probably do not need it, which is worth more.

English is widely accepted in Denmark. Danish public administration, universities and employers work comfortably in English, and Danish authorities routinely accept documents in English or Danish. Indian certificates are normally issued in English already. That removes, in most files, the single largest cost in a European attestation job.

But confirm it, do not assume it. The acceptance is a matter of practice rather than a published universal rule, and individual offices differ. One email to the receiving office settles it. If they say Danish is required, use a translator they name rather than one you find, because the acceptance rules are theirs.

SIRI is the body most Indian applicants deal with. The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration handles work and study residence permits, and it publishes document lists for each scheme. Read the list for your specific scheme rather than a general guide, because the schemes differ sharply in what they want.

Assessment is separate from the apostille, and slower. Danish recognition of a foreign qualification is a judgement about level and content, made on your transcript. The apostille simply makes the Indian document usable. People conflate the two, start the assessment late, and lose a semester.

Name consistency matters more in Denmark than almost anywhere. The civil registration system ties everything to one identity, and a name spelled differently on a degree and a passport causes real delay. Fix discrepancies at the issuing authority before anything is apostilled, because an apostille on an inconsistent document simply certifies the inconsistency.

Denmark embassy attestation is not the obstacle on a Danish file; language and assessment are. Send us the document list you were given and you will be told which stages are ours, which are Danish, and whether you need a translation at all.

What a Denmark embassy attestation quote does not cover

Every service has a boundary, and the boundary of Denmark embassy attestation is worth stating before you commit.

Arranged by you, not by us

  • University or board verification. We do not apply to universities, State boards or ITIs on your behalf.
  • State HRD or home department authentication. Arranged by you; anything that department charges is paid to them.
  • Credential assessment and Danish-language translation. Assessment is decided in Denmark and translation, in the rare files that need it, is arranged separately.
  • Permit and portal fees. The cost of the application you are making is separate from the cost of legalising documents for it.
  • Obtaining a fresh copy of a certificate. The issuing registrar, board or university does this, not us.

INFINITYGRO facilitates; it does not decide. Statutory stages cannot be skipped by anyone, and the outcome rests with the Ministry and the receiving authority.

The set that starts the work

Once you know an apostille is what Denmark needs, this is the set that starts the Indian stages. Everything in Denmark embassy attestation work starts from this set.

  • The original document, flat, unlaminated and undamaged
  • Transcripts or course records, where assessment or admission requires them
  • The document list from SIRI, the university or the employer
  • A passport copy, photo page and address page, with spellings reconciled against the certificates
  • The signed authorisation letter, from the template we email you
  • Return address and mobile number, unless you are collecting in person

Our note on common mistakes during certificate apostille is worth five minutes, and the HRD attestation guide explains the State stage where it applies.

Denmark also has a Consulate General in Bengaluru and consulates in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, but visa and permit matters all route to New Delhi.

This mission does not attest or legalise Indian documents. Because Denmark is an Apostille Convention country, the apostille is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi and the chain ends there. We publish these details because people ask for them, and they are useful for visa and other consular enquiries — but do not take your documents here expecting a stamp.

Frequently asked questions on Denmark embassy attestation

What people actually ring up and ask about Denmark embassy attestation.

Do I need Danish embassy attestation in India in 2026?

No. The Hague Apostille Convention came into force for Denmark on 29 December 2006, so an MEA apostille from New Delhi is the complete legalisation of an Indian public document for Denmark. Nothing goes to the Danish embassy. A quotation that includes a Danish consular legalisation charge is working from pre-2006 information.

Do my documents need to be translated into Danish?

Usually not. Danish authorities, universities and employers routinely accept documents in English, and Indian certificates are normally issued in English already. This is the main reason a Danish file costs less than a Croatian or Czech one. Confirm it in one email with the receiving office rather than assuming, because individual offices can differ.

What does SIRI want from an Indian applicant?

SIRI, the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration, publishes a document list for each residence scheme, and the schemes differ considerably. Typically it wants the apostilled qualification with transcripts, proof of the job offer or admission, and identity documents. Read the list for your specific scheme rather than a general guide. None of it involves Denmark embassy attestation at a consular counter.

Is credential assessment the same thing as an apostille?

No, and conflating them costs people a semester. The apostille makes your Indian document legally usable in Denmark. Assessment is a separate Danish judgement about what your qualification is worth, decided on your transcript and course content. Start the assessment enquiry first, because it is much the slower of the two.

What do Denmark embassy attestation fees come to?

There is no Danish mission charge, so the quote covers the Ministry's statutory charge per document, the Notary and SDM stages, our handling and the courier. In most Danish files there is no translation cost either. Send a photograph of the documents and you will have the whole thing in writing before anything starts.

How long does the Indian side take for a Danish file?

The Indian stages are short and predictable: the Notary and SDM stages, then the Ministry. What takes time on a Danish application is the Danish side, particularly credential assessment and SIRI processing. Build your timetable around their published processing times, not around ours. The Denmark embassy attestation question itself is settled in one sentence: you do not need one.

Do I send original certificates or copies?

Originals. An apostille is applied to the original public document, not to a photocopy, and Danish offices generally want to see the apostilled original or a certified copy taken from it. Send the certificate flat and unlaminated, because a laminated document cannot take the sticker and will be returned.

My degree and my passport spell my name differently. Does that matter?

In Denmark, yes, more than in most countries. The civil registration system ties records to a single identity and a mismatch causes real delay. Correct the spelling at the issuing authority before anything is apostilled. Applying an apostille to an inconsistent document only certifies the inconsistency and does not fix it.

Does an Indian apostille work in Greenland and the Faroe Islands?

Ask the receiving authority rather than relying on a general answer about Denmark. The two territories are self-governing with their own administrative arrangements, and the safe course is to get their requirement confirmed in writing before you prepare anything. For mainland Denmark the apostille is straightforward.

What about commercial documents for a Danish company?

Company paperwork takes a different chain: Chamber of Commerce attestation, then the Ministry of External Affairs, then the apostille. There is no Notary or SDM stage for commercial documents. Danish commercial practice runs in English, so these files rarely need translation, and a covering letter on company letterhead should travel with the set.

Can I get the apostille without going to Delhi myself?

Yes. Send the originals to our Delhi office by tracked courier and they come back the same way, with a scan emailed to you first so you can check the apostille before the parcel moves. You are welcome to drop documents in person and collect them if you are in Delhi, which costs less than courier both ways.
