Birth Certificate Apostille for Norway: What UDI Expects from Indian Applicants

Norway’s Directorate of Immigration (UDI) is direct about Indian documents: original documents issued by public authorities must carry an apostille. A birth certificate for a family immigration case, a child joining a parent, or study and work in Norway falls under that rule. Here is what UDI asks for, how the apostille is done in Delhi, and the copies and translation you may also need.

Quick answer: what Norway needs

Birth certificate apostille for Norway is the MEA apostille on an Indian birth certificate. UDI’s country guidance for India says original documents issued by public authorities must carry an apostille, and that the passport does not. Norway and India are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi does not add a stamp.

INFINITYGRO arranges the notary and SDM stages and the MEA apostille in Delhi for Rs 1,000–1,500 per certificate, all-inclusive, usually in 2–3 working days; courier is extra. If the certificate is not in English or Norwegian, UDI wants a translation by an authorised or certified translator.

Part 1 · UDI’s rules

What UDI says about Indian documents

ApostilleOriginal documents issued by public authorities must carry an apostille stamp
PassportDoes not need an apostille
LanguageDocuments not in Norwegian or English must be translated into one of them by an authorised or certified translator
Translator detailsThe translation must state who translated it and when
OriginalsAll originals and your passport are shown; copies of every document are handed in
Copies abroadIf you apply outside Norway, copies must be stamped by your country’s authorities or a notary

These points come from UDI’s page on apostille and legalisation for family immigration, with India selected. Other Norwegian offices, such as universities or employers, may ask for an apostilled birth certificate too and can set their own rules.

Part 2 · The certificate

Preparing an Indian birth certificate for Norway

  • Use the certificate issued by the municipal or panchayat Registrar of Births and Deaths
  • Make sure it carries the person’s name, matching the passport
  • Many Indian certificates already include English; if yours is only in Hindi or a regional language, plan a translation
  • Do not laminate it; the notary and SDM must be able to examine the seal and signature
INFINITYGRO does not issue or correct birth certificates. If the name is missing or wrong, the issuing registrar has to fix it before the apostille.

FAQs

FAQs: Birth Certificate Apostille for Norway: What UDI Expects from Indian Applicants

Does Norway need an apostille on an Indian birth certificate?

For UDI, yes. Its guidance for India says original documents issued by public authorities must carry an apostille stamp. A birth certificate issued by an Indian registrar is such a document. Other Norwegian offices may follow similar rules, so check the instructions you were given.

Do I also need Royal Norwegian Embassy legalisation?

No. Norway and India are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the MEA apostille is the final step on the Indian side. The Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi does not legalise the certificate on top of it.

Does my birth certificate need a Norwegian translation?

Not if it is in English. UDI accepts documents in Norwegian or English. A certificate only in Hindi or another language must be translated into one of those two by an authorised or certified translator, who must be named and dated on the translation.

What does the birth certificate apostille for Norway cost?

Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per certificate, all-inclusive of the notary, SDM attestation, the Rs 50 MEA fee and our service. Courier is extra both ways. There is no Norwegian Embassy fee. Translation and extra notarised copies, if needed, are quoted separately.

Does my passport need an apostille for UDI?

No. UDI’s guidance for India says the passport does not need an apostille. You show the original passport with your application. Only documents issued by Indian public authorities, such as birth or marriage certificates, need the apostille.

What are stamped copies, and do I need them?

UDI asks for copies of all documents. If you apply from outside Norway, those copies must be stamped by your country’s authorities or a notary. If you apply at a police station in Norway, the copies need no stamp. We can arrange notarised copies in Delhi.

How long does it take?

Usually 2–3 working days in Delhi once the original reaches us, plus courier time both ways. The online QR apostille through INFINITYGRO is also usually ready in 2–3 working days if you send the document and a passport copy.

Can you apostille my child’s birth certificate for a Norway family case?

Yes. Either parent can send the child’s certificate with the child’s passport copy, or a parent’s if the child has none yet. The child does not need to be present at any stage, and the certificate comes back by secure courier.
