Jamaica Embassy Attestation Fees 2026: The Post-2021 Apostille Route for Kingston and Montego Bay
Jamaica Embassy Attestation changed character in mid-2021, and many checklists circulating among recruiters still describe the old method. This page explains what Jamaican offices now expect from an Indian certificate and how we prepare it.
What changed: The Hague Apostille Convention entered into force for Jamaica on 3 July 2021. Since then an Indian paper headed for Jamaica needs only verification inside India followed by an MEA apostille; the Jamaican High Commission opened in New Delhi in 2024 does not add a stamp. English is Jamaica's official language, so no translation is needed for English documents.

Jamaica Embassy Attestation before and after July 2021
Until mid-2021 Jamaica stood outside the Hague system, so an Indian certificate needed MEA attestation plus legalisation by a Jamaican post, often abroad, since Jamaica long had no mission in India. Jamaica's accession removed the chain.
| Stage | Up to 2 July 2021 | From 3 July 2021 |
|---|---|---|
| Indian verification | State HRD, Home Department/SDM or Chamber | Unchanged |
| Ministry of External Affairs | Attestation stamp | Apostille certificate with QR code |
| Jamaican consular step | Legalisation by a Jamaican mission | Not required |
| Proof of authenticity in Jamaica | Consular signature | Apostille checked online |
If an older checklist from Kingston still mentions the embassy, read it as the modern Jamaica Embassy Attestation: an apostille. Jamaica's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade began issuing apostilles for Jamaican records the same month.
Who in Jamaica asks for apostilled Indian papers?
Work permit applicants
Employers apply to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security; teachers, nurses, doctors, accountants, IT and contact-centre staff add a degree, experience letters and a PCC.
Dependants
A spouse joining a permit holder shows the marriage; each child shows a birth certificate. These two records are the backbone of any family move.
Couples marrying in Jamaica
Resort weddings in Negril, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay need proof of identity and of freedom to marry from both partners.
Property, estates and companies
Heirs, land buyers and firms registering with the Companies Office of Jamaica sign powers of attorney and resolutions in India.
In short: the qualification shows you can do the job, the PCC shows a clean record, and civil records prove family ties.
Degree certificate attestation for Jamaica
Typical academic files: B.Ed degrees for teachers, B.Sc Nursing and GNM diplomas, MBBS with internship certificates, B.Com, CA and MBA papers, engineering degrees, marksheets, transcripts and Class 10 or 12 certificates.
- Pre-checkWe read every certificate against your passport for spelling and date of birth, and flag lamination or damage before anything is submitted.
- Notarial copyWhere the state department insists, a notary attests a photocopy that travels with the original.
- State verificationThe education department of the state that issued the degree confirms it, sometimes after a reference to the university.
- MEA apostilleThe ministry adds its numbered certificate, and the degree is ready for any Jamaican authority.
Equivalence of foreign qualifications in Jamaica is generally assessed by the University Council of Jamaica, while health workers also register with the relevant council, such as the Nursing Council of Jamaica or the Medical Council of Jamaica.
Marriage certificate attestation for Jamaica and other civil records
Personal papers take a different lane: the state Home Department authenticates them, or for Delhi-issued records the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, and MEA then apostilles. A police clearance printed by Passport Seva is the exception and goes to MEA directly.
| Record | Indian authority before MEA | Typical Jamaican purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage certificate | Home Department or SDM | Spouse's dependant status |
| Birth certificate | Home Department or SDM | Children's dependant status and schooling |
| Police clearance (PCC) | None for a Passport Seva PCC | Work permit and residence |
| Experience letter | Notary, then Home Department | Work permit for skilled posts |
| Single status affidavit | Notary, then Home Department | Wedding in Jamaica |
| Divorce decree or death certificate | Home Department | Remarriage, estate matters |

Do birth certificate attestation for Jamaica and PCC attestation for Jamaica together with the degree, since employers often ask for all three at once. For a wedding, get the marriage officer's list early.
Jamaica apostille for powers of attorney and trade documents
Families settling land or estates in Jamaica, and owners who cannot fly to Kingston, appoint an attorney-at-law through a power of attorney signed in India: drafted on stamp paper in the Jamaican lawyer's wording, notarised, authenticated and apostilled.
India sends pharmaceuticals, vehicles, textiles and rice, and buys Jamaican alumina. Papers Jamaican buyers, banks or the registry may want apostilled:
- Company power of attorney and board resolution naming a Jamaican agent
- Certificate of incorporation, MOA and AOA
- Certificate of Origin, commercial invoice and packing list
- Free sale certificate, GMP and COPP for medicines
- Distributorship agreement and letter of authorisation
- GST certificate, IEC and bank reference letter

Company papers are certified by a Chamber of Commerce in India and then apostilled by MEA; nothing goes to the Jamaican High Commission.

Jamaica Embassy Attestation FAQ
Does the Jamaican High Commission in New Delhi attest Indian documents?
No. Since the Apostille Convention entered into force for Jamaica on 3 July 2021, Indian documents need only state or Chamber verification and an MEA apostille. The High Commission, opened in 2024, is not part of the chain.
When did Jamaica start accepting apostilles?
The Hague Apostille Convention has applied to Jamaica since 3 July 2021. Before that, Indian papers needed MEA attestation followed by legalisation at a Jamaican mission, which is why older checklists still mention an embassy stamp.
What are Jamaica embassy attestation fees?
With us a PCC costs ₹1,000 to ₹1,500, a birth certificate starts at ₹1,500 and a marriage certificate costs ₹1,500 to ₹2,500, all inclusive. Degrees and company papers are quoted individually. No Jamaican consular fee applies.
How long does degree certificate attestation for Jamaica take?
Usually one to three weeks. The state education department's verification is the slow part, especially when it writes to the university; the MEA apostille itself follows quickly once verification is complete.
Do I need marriage certificate attestation for Jamaica to take my wife?
Yes, if she is applying as your dependant. The registrar's marriage certificate is authenticated by the Home Department or SDM and apostilled by MEA, and her passport name should match it.
Are documents translated for Jamaica?
No. English is Jamaica's official language, so English certificates are used as issued. A certificate printed only in Hindi or another Indian language should get a certified English translation before the apostille stage.
Who issues work permits in Jamaica?
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security processes work permits, usually on the employer's application. The employer's checklist decides which apostilled qualifications, experience letters and police records you need.
Can I sign a power of attorney in India for property in Jamaica?
Yes. Use the wording from your Jamaican attorney-at-law, sign on stamp paper before a notary, have it authenticated by the Home Department and apostilled by MEA. We can courier it to Kingston directly.
Is a Passport Seva PCC accepted for Jamaica?
Yes. A police clearance from Passport Seva or a Regional Passport Office is apostilled by MEA without state verification, usually in two to four working days. Apply close to your travel date.
Which papers are needed for a wedding in Jamaica?
Typically passports, birth certificates and proof of single status, plus a divorce decree or death certificate if previously married. An apostilled single status affidavit serves Indians. Confirm details with your marriage officer.
