apostille
An apostille for UK is the MEA apostille on an Indian public document after verification by the competent Indian authority – a notary and SDM for powers of attorney and affidavits, the home department or SDM for birth, marriage and death certificates, a chamber of commerce for company documents. UK solicitors, courts, banks and registries accept it without legalisation by the British High Commission. UK visa applications, by contrast, normally need only copies and, for non-English documents, a translation.
UK embassy attestation is not needed – the apostille for UK is
The British High Commission in New Delhi does not legalise Indian public documents for use in Britain. India and the UK are both members of the Apostille Convention, so a UK solicitor or court that asks for a “legalised” or “authenticated” Indian document is asking for the MEA apostille.
For UK visas the picture is different: the Home Office generally works with copies, and requires a full English translation of any document not in English, with the translator’s confirmation and contact details. The apostille for UK matters most in property and probate files, court cases, company and banking matters, and when a registry or professional body asks for it.

Translation and the apostille for UK
Most Indian certificates and court papers are in English and are used in the UK as they are. A document – or stamp – in Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati or another Indian language needs a full English translation that confirms it is accurate, gives the date and the translator’s full name and contact details; the translation is made after the apostille and includes it.
We prepare English translations in this Home Office-style format. See our UK visa translation service.
