Guatemala Embassy Attestation Fees 2026: How the 2017 Apostille Switch Works

Until 2017 an Indian certificate bound for Guatemala City passed through the Guatemalan Embassy in New Delhi and then the foreign ministry in Guatemala. That three-desk chain is gone, but plenty of outdated checklists still circulate.

What applies now: The Apostille Convention entered into force for Guatemala on 18 September 2017. Since then Indian public documents are verified locally and receive one MEA apostille, with no embassy legalisation. Guatemalan migration, universities and the health regulator then expect a Spanish translation of the apostilled document.

What changed for Guatemala in September 2017?

Guatemala signed up to the 1961 Hague Convention with effect from 18 September 2017. Before that date, Indian documents had to collect three separate endorsements: MEA attestation, legalisation by the Guatemalan Embassy in New Delhi (which opened in 2013), and a final authentication in Guatemala itself. Each step meant an extra fee and extra days.

If an employer, lawyer or university in Guatemala still sends you a checklist that mentions the embassy, show them the apostille sticker and its QR code. Guatemala's foreign ministry is itself the apostille authority for Guatemalan documents going abroad, so local officials are familiar with the format.

Why would you need a Guatemala apostille?

  • Employment. Indians in Guatemala mostly work in call centres, export trading, auto-parts distribution and pharmaceutical marketing. The work and residence file usually asks for an apostilled degree, experience certificates and a police clearance.
  • Spouse and children. When an employee brings family, the marriage certificate links the spouse to the main permit, and birth certificates do the same for each child.
  • Product registration. Indian drug makers register medicines through local agents, and the health ministry needs certified manufacturer documents.
  • Study and recognition. Postgraduate admission or recognition of a foreign title involves the Universidad de San Carlos (USAC) or a private university, which review apostilled transcripts.
  • Marriage and family law. Indians marrying in Guatemala, or handling inheritance and custody, present civil records and affidavits.

Pharma and trade: commercial document attestation for Guatemala

Guatemala is one of India's biggest export markets in Central America, with Indian sales of roughly half a billion US dollars a year. Medicines lead, followed by cotton yarn and textiles, motorcycles and three-wheelers, auto components, steel and machinery. Companies such as Cipla, Aurobindo and Caplin Point sell through local agents or representative offices.

A registration dossier filed with Guatemala's Ministry of Public Health typically relies on manufacturer documents issued in India. The papers we apostille most for this purpose:

  • Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP)
  • WHO-GMP or Schedule M compliance certificate
  • Free sale certificate and manufacturing licence
  • Letter of authorisation appointing the Guatemalan registration holder
  • Distribution or agency agreement
  • Product registration documents, test certificates and stability data covers
  • For other exporters: invoice, packing list, Certificate of Origin, incorporation certificate, board resolution, company POA

Each item is certified by a Chamber of Commerce or routed as its issuing authority requires, then apostilled by MEA. We price dossiers per document.

Degree certificate attestation for Guatemala

Academic records commonly sent for a Guatemalan job or admission include the bachelor's or master's degree, B.Pharm and M.Pharm certificates for regulatory affairs staff, engineering diplomas, semester marksheets and consolidated transcripts, provisional certificates, and Class 10 or 12 board certificates as birth-date proof.

  1. Collect and inspectWe receive the original, compare it with your passport spelling and flag any lamination or damage.
  2. University and state checkThe education department of the issuing state verifies the degree, contacting the university where its rules require.
  3. MEA apostilleThe Ministry of External Affairs adds the apostille; nothing further is needed from India.
  4. Spanish version in GuatemalaA translator accepted by the receiving office prepares the Spanish text, including the sticker.

How many days does a Guatemala file take?

Roughly: two to four working days for a Passport Seva PCC, five to eight for family certificates, about a week for Chamber-endorsed trade documents, and one to three weeks for degrees. Heavy pharmaceutical dossiers depend on how many certificates the regulator issued and how quickly the manufacturer signs covering letters.

What to send us, and common slip-ups

  • Original documents with clear seals; no lamination
  • Passport copy with the same spelling as every certificate
  • For companies: request letter on letterhead naming the signatory
  • Avoid sending photocopies when the Guatemalan side wants originals apostilled
  • Do not translate before the apostille; the sticker must be translated too

Guatemala apostille questions

Does Guatemala still need embassy attestation for Indian documents?

No. Since 18 September 2017 Guatemala has applied the Apostille Convention, so an MEA apostille replaces the old embassy legalisation and the extra authentication in Guatemala City.

What are Guatemala embassy attestation fees in 2026?

Our complete prices are ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 for a police clearance, from ₹1,500 for a birth certificate and ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 for a marriage certificate. Degrees and commercial documents are quoted individually. No embassy fee applies.

My Guatemalan lawyer asked for embassy legalisation. What should I do?

Explain that the requirement ended in 2017 and send a scan of the apostilled document showing its QR code. Guatemalan authorities accept apostilles from every Convention member, including India.

Which documents does a pharmaceutical company need for Guatemala?

Typically COPP, GMP certificate, free sale certificate, manufacturing licence, authorisation letter for the local registration holder and the distribution agreement. Each is apostilled by MEA after the relevant Indian certification.

How long does degree certificate attestation for Guatemala take?

Usually one to three weeks. The state education department is the slowest step; MEA generally issues the apostille within a few working days once verification is done.

Is a Spanish translation mandatory?

In practice yes. Guatemalan offices work in Spanish, so the apostilled document and the sticker are translated in Guatemala by a translator accepted by the authority receiving your file.

Do I need marriage certificate attestation for Guatemala to take my spouse?

Yes, a spouse joining an employee is processed as a dependant, and Guatemalan migration needs an apostilled marriage certificate with Spanish translation to establish the relationship.

Can an Indian degree be recognised by a Guatemalan university?

Recognition of foreign titles generally involves the Universidad de San Carlos or the admitting university. They review apostilled degrees and transcripts, sometimes with syllabus copies, so check their list before applying.

Is PCC attestation for Guatemala quicker than other documents?

Yes. A PCC issued by Passport Seva or a Regional Passport Office goes straight to MEA without state verification, so it is usually apostilled within two to four working days.

What does the Guatemalan Embassy in New Delhi do now?

It handles visas, passports and other consular services and promotes bilateral relations. It no longer legalises Indian public documents, because the apostille has replaced that step.

Can you apostille documents for call-centre jobs in Guatemala?

Yes. Contact-centre employers usually want a degree or Class 12 certificate, experience letters and a PCC. We verify and apostille them together so the full set returns at once.
