Quick answer

Agency agreement attestation for Bolivia: quick answer

Agency agreement attestation for Bolivia now means an MEA apostille. The Plurinational State of Bolivia acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention and it entered into force for Bolivia on 7 May 2018, according to the HCCH status table. India raised no objection, so an agency or distribution agreement signed in India is notarised, attested by a Chamber of Commerce and apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs.

Bolivian offices and businesses work in Spanish, so your partner will usually want a Spanish version. INFINITYGRO handles the three Indian stages and translates into Spanish if your partner accepts a translation from India. The total is quoted in writing after we see the agreement.

Part 1 · What changed

The 2018 change: from embassy legalisation to apostille

Older instructions for Bolivia, including some still circulating among exporters, describe MEA attestation followed by legalisation at a Bolivian diplomatic mission. That was the route before Bolivia joined the Apostille Convention.

Before 7 May 2018

Notary, Chamber of Commerce, MEA attestation, then legalisation by a Bolivian embassy or consulate.

From 7 May 2018

Notary, Chamber of Commerce and the MEA apostille. Bolivian authorities accept the apostille in place of consular legalisation.

If your Bolivian partner sends an old checklist asking for a consular stamp, share it with us. We confirm the route in writing before starting, so you do not pay for a stage that no longer applies.
Part 2 · Spanish

Preparing the Spanish version

An English agreement usually needs a Spanish text in Bolivia. Settle how this will be done before the stamps go on, because changing the document afterwards means apostilling it again.

01

Bilingual agreement

English and Spanish side by side, signed together. The whole document is apostilled once and both texts carry the stamp.

02

Translation from India

INFINITYGRO translates the agreement into Spanish, quoted by page, if your partner confirms that a translation made abroad will be accepted.

03

Translation in Bolivia

Your partner has the apostilled English agreement translated locally by a translator their authority accepts.

Give us your partner’s registered name exactly as it appears in Bolivia, including its legal form, so the Spanish text matches their records.

  5. 5

Part 4 · In Bolivia

Where a Bolivian partner uses the agreement

  • Showing importers, buyers or banks that they represent your company
  • Product registration files where the local importer must show a link with the foreign maker
  • Bids in public or private tenders for your products
  • Evidence if a dispute about the agency arises

The apostille confirms the signature and seal of the Indian authority. It does not certify the terms, and it does not register anything in Bolivia. Ask a Bolivian lawyer about local registration or tax points; INFINITYGRO handles the Indian stages only.

Part 5 · Supporting papers

Other documents Bolivian partners often ask for

If your partner’s file also needs proof of your company or of the products, these can be apostilled in the same courier.

FAQs

FAQs: Agency Agreement Attestation for Bolivia

When did Bolivia start accepting apostilles?

The Apostille Convention entered into force for Bolivia on 7 May 2018, after its accession in 2017, according to the HCCH status table. India did not object, so since then an MEA apostille has replaced consular legalisation for documents from India.

Is the Bolivian Embassy involved at all?

Not for this agreement. Once the MEA apostille is on, Bolivian authorities accept it without a consular stamp. If you also need a document for a country outside the Convention, that one follows a different route, and we will say so in the quote.

Can the agreement be in Spanish only?

Yes, if both parties sign a Spanish agreement. The notary and chamber in India work with the signature and the company seal, but they may ask for a translation to understand the content. A bilingual English and Spanish agreement avoids that question.

Will my partner accept your Spanish translation?

That depends on the Bolivian office receiving it. Some accept a translation made abroad; others want one made locally. Ask your partner before ordering. If they accept ours, we translate the agreement and return it with the apostilled original.

Does Santa Cruz need anything different from La Paz?

The apostille is the same throughout Bolivia. What varies is the office that receives the agreement and its own checklist, which your partner will know. Send us that checklist if it mentions anything about the Indian side.

Can a distributor in Bolivia also cover Peru?

That is a commercial question for your agreement. On the attestation side, each country is checked separately against the HCCH table; send us the list of countries and we will confirm in writing whether one apostille covers them all.

How long does it take?

It depends on the chamber and the MEA centre, so we give the expected time in your written quote. There is no embassy stage. Courier time to Delhi and back, and any translation, are added to that.

Can a notarised copy be apostilled instead of the signed original?

Sometimes, but Bolivian partners usually want the signed original with the apostille on it, because that is the document they rely on. If you must keep the original in India, ask your partner whether an apostilled notarised copy is acceptable before we start, and we will quote for that instead.
