apostille
An apostille for Belgium is the MEA apostille on an Indian public document once the competent Indian authority has verified it – the home department or SDM for birth and marriage certificates, a notary and SDM for affidavits, the state education department for degrees. Belgian communes, the Immigration Office and universities accept it without legalisation by the Belgian Embassy. A sworn translation into the language of your region – Dutch, French or German – is usually required.
Belgium embassy attestation is not needed – the apostille for Belgium is
Older guidance on Belgium is often wrong for one historical reason: when India acceded to the Convention in 2005, Belgium lodged an objection, so for a few years Indian documents still needed Belgian Embassy legalisation. Belgium withdrew that objection on 9 January 2008. Since then the MEA apostille is the authentication Belgium expects, and the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi does not add a stamp.
What Belgian communes look at closely is the content: the exact spelling of names, both parents’ names on a birth certificate, and – for marriage – a single-status document in an acceptable form. We check these before the apostille for Belgium is applied.

Sworn translation after the apostille for Belgium
Belgium works in three languages, and your commune decides which one: Dutch in Flanders, French in Wallonia, Dutch or French in Brussels, German in the East Cantons. Communes usually want a translation by a sworn translator (beëdigd vertaler / traducteur juré), made after the apostille and covering it.
We prepare the translation in the language your commune names. See our French, Dutch and German translation services.
