Quick answer

A marriage certificate apostille in Goa is completed in New Delhi: notary, SDM attestation and the MEA apostille, in about 2–3 working days after the certificate arrives, for ₹1,000–₹1,500 plus courier. Goa marriages are registered by the Civil Registrar under the Goa Civil Code. The UK, Canada and most of Europe accept the apostille; Portugal sometimes asks for the state Home Department route, so check the checklist first.

The Goa Civil Code: why every Goan marriage has a civil record

Goa is unique in India. Under the Goa Civil Code, inherited from the Portuguese era, every marriage – whatever the couple's religion – is registered with the Civil Registrar. Church weddings, temple weddings and civil marriages alike end up in the same civil register at the taluka office.

That makes Goa certificates very consistent. The Civil Registrar-cum-Sub-Registrar issues a marriage certificate, usually in English, with the registrar's seal and signature. Older records can contain Portuguese wording, especially for marriages registered decades ago.

For the apostille, MEA needs the certificate issued by the Civil Registrar – a church marriage certificate on its own is a religious record and should be accompanied by the civil certificate.

Applying for Portuguese nationality or registering your marriage in Portugal? Some Portuguese consulates ask for the state Home Department attestation instead of the SDM route. Send us the checklist and we will confirm before you pay.
