Every birth in Sikkim is registered with the local Registrar of Births and Deaths. In Gangtok that is the municipal corporation; in smaller towns the nagar panchayat; in rural wards the panchayat-level registrar. Since the 2023 amendment to the Act, new certificates are generated on the national CRS system, carry a QR code and act as a single proof of date of birth.
Older Sikkim certificates – handwritten or typed, issued years ago – are still valid public records. MEA apostilles them as long as they are legible and signed and sealed by the registrar.
A hospital birth slip, a baptism record from a church or a monastery record is useful supporting evidence, but it is not the registered certificate. If that is all you have, the birth must first be registered (late registration is allowed).
