Quick answer

A marriage certificate apostille in Sikkim is completed in New Delhi through a notary, the SDM and the Ministry of External Affairs, in about 2–3 working days after the certificate arrives, for ₹1,000–₹1,500 plus courier. The government registration certificate issued in Sikkim is what MEA apostilles; Buddhist, Hindu and Christian ceremonies all need that civil registration.

Registration in Sikkim

Monastery, temple or church – and the certificate MEA needs

Sikkim's couples marry in monasteries, temples and churches, and many hold a ceremony record from the religious body. For use abroad, the marriage must also be registered with the government; the district registrar or Marriage Officer then issues the certificate that MEA apostilles.

Sikkim certificates are generally in English, occasionally with Nepali wording. English-speaking destinations rarely need a translation.

Because Sikkim joined India in 1975 and kept some of its old laws, couples occasionally hold older forms of certificate. If yours looks unusual, send a photo first and we will check it before the original travels.
