Marriage Certificate Apostille in Tamil Nadu

Your Tamil Nadu marriage certificate comes from a Sub-Registrar's office – the same office that registers property. Send that original to our Delhi office from Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai or any town, and it returns with the MEA apostille that Singapore, the USA, the UK and Australia ask for.

Quick answer

A marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu is completed in New Delhi: a notary verifies it, the SDM attests it and the Ministry of External Affairs fixes the apostille. With INFINITYGRO this takes 2–3 working days after the certificate arrives from Tamil Nadu and costs ₹1,000–₹1,500 plus courier. Singapore, the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia accept it; the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait need attestation instead.

How Tamil Nadu registers marriages

Why your certificate comes from a Sub-Registrar, not a municipality

Tamil Nadu is unusual. Since the Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriages Act, 2009, marriages are registered by the Registration Department – at the same Sub-Registrar's offices that register sale deeds – rather than by the panchayat or corporation, as in most states.

The result is a fairly standard certificate: printed, usually in both Tamil and English, with a registration number and the Sub-Registrar's signature and seal. That uniformity helps at MEA. A marriage solemnised in a temple, church or mosque and registered later at the Sub-Registrar's office gets the same kind of certificate, and so does a marriage registered under the Special Marriage Act.

What cannot be apostilled is a private record: a temple marriage receipt, a church register extract on its own, or a wedding card. If that is all you have, the marriage has to be registered at the Sub-Registrar's office first.

The initials question: a certificate that reads R. Karthik and a passport that reads Karthik Ramasamy is normal in Tamil Nadu, but a foreign officer may not see them as the same person. An apostilled one-and-the-same-person affidavit, sent along with the certificate, usually settles it.

Documents to courier from Tamil Nadu

Keep it simple – three things go in the envelope:

  1. The original Sub-Registrar marriage certificate (or the digitally signed copy, printed). Do not laminate it.
  2. Passport copies of both spouses, first and last pages – these let us spot initial-versus-full-name problems early.
  3. A slip with the destination country and your WhatsApp number.

There is no pickup from Tamil Nadu. Courier the envelope to INFINITYGRO, C-5 A/2, New Ashok Nagar, Delhi – 110096 by DTDC Prime, Blue Dart or India Post Speed Post, and WhatsApp us the tracking number.

Can you visit Delhi? You are welcome to hand over the original and collect it again at our office in New Ashok Nagar. If you are sending it from another state, courier it to us – once the work is complete we return it by Blue Dart or another reputed, fully tracked courier.

Marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu: cost

OUR CHARGE₹1,000–1,500per certificate

If you also need a name affidavit or a translation for the destination country, we quote it separately before starting.

Get it right first time

Initials, affidavits and translations for a marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu

Most Tamil Nadu certificates sail through MEA. The questions start later, at a visa desk in Singapore, Sydney or Houston, when an officer compares the certificate with the passport. Three small preparations prevent almost every problem.

1. The one-and-the-same-person affidavit

If the certificate shows a name with initials (K. Arun) and the passport shows the expanded form (Arun Kumaresan), a short affidavit on stamp paper states that both names belong to the same person. It is notarised and apostilled along with the certificate, so the two travel together as one set.

2. A translation that matches the destination

Bilingual Tamil–English certificates are usually enough for English-speaking countries. Germany, France or the Netherlands may want the Tamil wording translated by a sworn translator. INFINITYGRO provides translation in every major language, so the translated copy can be prepared while the apostille is in progress.

3. One envelope, one trip

Send the certificate, both passport copies and the affidavit details together. That way the marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu – certificate, affidavit and translation – comes back complete in a single courier, rather than in instalments.

Tip from our desk: before posting, photograph the Sub-Registrar seal and the registration number. If the visa office later asks a question, you can answer it without opening the envelope again.

FAQ

Marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu – questions couples ask

My name appears with initials on the certificate. Will MEA reject it?

No. MEA apostilles the certificate as issued. The question arises abroad, which is why we suggest an apostilled one-and-the-same-person affidavit with the certificate.

Can a certificate downloaded from the Registration Department website be apostilled?

Yes, if it carries the Sub-Registrar's digital signature or verification details. Plain unsigned printouts are not accepted.

Does Singapore accept an MEA apostille on an Indian marriage certificate?

Yes. Singapore is a member of the Apostille Convention, so the MEA apostille is the correct legalisation.

My marriage was only in a temple. What do I do?

Register the marriage at the Sub-Registrar's office first. The certificate it issues is the one MEA can apostille.

Do I need Tamil Nadu Home Department attestation?

Usually not – the SDM route is accepted by most countries. If an embassy has asked for state attestation in writing, tell us before you book.

How long does a marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu take from Chennai?

Around 2–3 working days in Delhi, plus two to three days of courier each way.
