Apostille for Switzerland

Starting a job in Zurich or Basel, enrolling at a Swiss university, or marrying a Swiss partner? Switzerland has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since 11 March 1973, so Indian public documents need the MEA apostille – after the state home department has attested civil records. For civil status documents there is one more Swiss step many agents forget: most cantons also ask for a verification through the Swiss Embassy. INFINITYGRO handles the Indian side of your apostille for Switzerland in Delhi and explains the Swiss side honestly.

Quick answer

An apostille for Switzerland is the MEA apostille placed on an Indian public document after verification in India – for birth, marriage and other civil status documents, the state home department; for degrees, the state education department; for company papers, a chamber of commerce. Swiss offices accept the apostille, but for civil status documents most cantons additionally ask for a verification carried out through the Embassy of Switzerland in India, which takes several months.

Apostille and Swiss verification

Switzerland embassy attestation vs apostille – what really applies

There is no Swiss Embassy “attestation” on top of the apostille: Switzerland and India are both Convention members, so the MEA apostille is the Indian authentication. For civil status documents (birth, marriage, divorce, single status), the Swiss Embassy’s published guidance asks for state home department legalisation followed by the MEA apostille.

The extra step is Swiss, not Indian. According to the Embassy, the majority of cantons require a verification of Indian civil status documents; it is carried out via the Embassy, takes about 3–4 months, and needs an advance payment (the Embassy currently states INR 40,000 for the standard process). We do not run that verification – it is a Swiss procedure – but we prepare the Indian documents correctly so it is not delayed.

Translation

Translation for the apostille for Switzerland

Switzerland has three main official languages, and the language you need depends on the canton: German in Zurich or Bern, French in Geneva or Lausanne, Italian in Ticino. Many Swiss offices accept English documents, but some civil registries ask for a translation into the cantonal language. The translation is made after the apostille and includes it.

We prepare German, French and Italian translations from the apostilled originals. See our German translation services and French translation services.
