Marriage Certificate Apostille in Chennai

Since 2009 every marriage in Tamil Nadu has to be registered, so most Chennai couples already hold a Sub-Registrar certificate in Tamil and English. That certificate needs one more thing before a foreign embassy will accept it – the MEA apostille – and you can arrange it from Chennai by courier.

INFINITYGRO takes the original by courier, finishes notary, SDM and MEA steps in New Delhi in about 2–3 working days and charges ₹1,000–₹1,500 per certificate plus courier. How Chennai registers

Sub-Registrar offices and the 2009 Act – which certificate MEA needs

Tamil Nadu made registration compulsory for every marriage, whatever the religion, through the Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriages Act, 2009. In Chennai the couple applies online, then appears at the Sub-Registrar office with jurisdiction over the place of marriage – Mylapore, T. Nagar, Saidapet, Anna Nagar and others – and receives a signed certificate.

A temple wedding receipt, a mandapam bill or a church register entry is proof of a ceremony, not a registration. MEA will not apostille those; it needs the Sub-Registrar certificate.

Couples who registered under the Special Marriage Act receive their certificate from the Marriage Officer; that version is apostilled in the same way.

Married before 2009 and never registered? Late registration is possible at the Sub-Registrar office; the resulting certificate can be apostilled.

Pitfalls

Mistakes Chennai couples should avoid

🛕

Temple receipt only

A temple or mandapam receipt is not a registration; get the Sub-Registrar certificate.

🇲🇾

Malaysia treated as apostille

Malaysia is not in the Convention; it needs MEA attestation and embassy legalisation.

🖨️

Portal printout

A downloaded certificate without the Sub-Registrar’s signature and seal will be refused.

Late registration

Married years ago without registering? Marriage certificate apostille in Chennai is still possible

Many couples who married before the 2009 Act, or who simply never visited the Sub-Registrar, find out only when a visa form asks for an apostilled certificate. The fix is a late registration:

  1. Apply at the Sub-Registrar office where the marriage took place, with the invitation, photographs and witness IDs.
  2. Collect the signed certificate (the late fee is modest).
  3. Courier the new certificate to us for the apostille.

The apostille does not care how old the marriage is – only that the certificate is genuine and signed. For more on the state, see marriage certificate apostille in Tamil Nadu.
