Chile Embassy Attestation: An Apostille Country Since 2016, and What That Changes

Chile embassy attestation is still the phrase people search, but Chile has been a Hague Apostille Convention country since 30 August 2016. An Indian document going to Santiago needs an MEA apostille, not a stamp from the Chilean Embassy.

INFINITYGRO completes that apostille, with the Notary and SDM stages before it, from our Delhi office. The part most agents forget to mention is the Spanish translation, which is what actually trips Chilean files up.

  • Chile embassy attestation replaced by apostille since 30 August 2016
  • No Chilean Embassy stamp needed on Indian documents
  • We flag the Spanish translation requirement before you post anything
  • Written quote first, work second — always in that order
Chile Embassy Attestation and MEA apostille for Indian documents going to Chile
An Indian document carrying the MEA apostille, which is what Chilean authorities accept.

In one paragraph: what Chile requires from India

Quick answer Last updated 8 October 2026

Chile accepts the Hague apostille, so Chile embassy attestation is not a separate stage. An Indian public document for Chile is notarised, attested by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Delhi and then given a numbered apostille by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Nothing afterwards goes to a Chile embassy or consulate.

Settling the Chile embassy attestation question first

Apostille country — no embassy stamp needed

Chile does not require embassy legalisation on Indian documents. The Apostille Convention entered into force for Chile on 30 August 2016, so an MEA apostille from New Delhi completes the chain on its own.

That has been the position for nearly a decade, yet pages describing a Chilean Embassy stamp are still all over the internet, mostly copied from each other. If a quotation you have been given includes a consular legalisation line for Chile, it is out of date.

What has not gone away is language. Chile works in Spanish, and most Chilean authorities, universities and employers want a translation alongside the apostilled original. That is a separate job from legalisation and is where Chilean files usually get delayed.

The entry-into-force date for Chile is published by the Hague Conference on Private International Law. Chile also issues its own documents electronically through an e-apostille system, which is why Chilean paperwork coming the other way may arrive as a verifiable PDF rather than a sticker.

The route an Indian document takes for Chile

Three stages in India and nothing at a Chilean office, followed by a translation step that is often handled in Chile rather than here. Everything Chile embassy attestation involves is in those stages and nowhere else.

Apostille route

Notary or State authentication, then the MEA apostille

Finished in New Delhi, with translation arranged separately.

  1. Arranged by you

University, board or State authentication, where the receiving body asks

Chilean universities and professional bodies sometimes want the qualification verified or State-authenticated before the Ministry sees it. Many do not. Get the requirement in writing first, because this stage is the slowest.

  2. Handled by INFINITYGRO

Notary Public and SDM attestation in Delhi

On the fast-track route a Delhi Notary Public records and seals the document and a Sub-Divisional Magistrate attests the notary's signature, which is the clearance the Ministry needs.

  3. Handled by INFINITYGRO

    MEA apostille

The Ministry of External Affairs applies the numbered apostille sticker. For Chile the legalisation chain ends there; nothing goes to the Chilean Embassy afterwards.

  4. Arranged by you

    Spanish translation, where required

Most Chilean authorities want the document in Spanish. Some accept a translation done in India and apostilled with the original; others insist on a translator recognised in Chile. Ask the receiving office which it is before paying for either.

Typically needed for: Work visas and residency, university admission and credit transfer, professional registration, marriage and birth registration with the Registro Civil, and company or trade documents.

One written question on Chile embassy attestation saves a wasted file

Chilean requirements are set by the receiving body, not by the embassy. A university, the Registro Civil, a professional college and an employer's HR department will each give you a different list, and the difference usually lies in the translation rather than in the apostille.

Sorting your paperwork: three groups, three routes to Chile

Three document families, three separate routes, one meeting point at the Ministry of External Affairs. That is the shape of the Indian system, and almost every wasted fee in Chile embassy attestation comes from someone putting a document into the wrong one of the three.

1. Personal documents

Personal and non-educational records

Civil-status documents sit here. They are the simplest family to process for Chile, provided you send the registrar's own original rather than a copy, a hospital record or a laminated keepsake.

What is in this group

  • Marriage certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Divorce decree
  • Death certificate
  • Police Clearance Certificate
  • Adoption deed
  • Personal Power of Attorney
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Single status certificate
  • Affidavit

The route

  1. Notary Public. The first signature on the chain. A Delhi Notary registers and seals the original document, which is what the magistrate's office verifies at the next stage.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  2. Attestation by an SDM. The magistrate certifies that the Notary who sealed your document is genuine. It is the fast lane through the State-level requirement and it happens in Delhi.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  3. The long option: Home Department of the issuing State. Some authorities will only accept the State's own GAD or Regional Attestation Centre stamp. It adds weeks and it is organised by you directly, not by us.Arranged by you
  4. MEA in New Delhi. Verification of the preceding signature, then the Ministry's numbered sticker on the reverse. This is the stamp Chile authorities look for, and only registered agencies may lodge the file.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  5. MEA apostille — the final stage for Chile. A numbered sticker with a QR code goes on the reverse of the document. Because Chile is an Apostille Convention country there is no mission stage at all, and Chile embassy attestation is simply the phrase people search for.Final stage
2. Educational documents

Degrees, diplomas, marksheets and transcripts

Academic paperwork is where most money is wasted in Chile embassy attestation, almost always by paying for a State-level stage that the receiving body in Chile never asked for. Get the requirement in writing before you commit.

What is in this group

  • Degree certificate
  • Provisional certificate
  • Consolidated marksheet
  • Transcripts
  • Diploma certificate
  • ITI / trade certificate
  • 12th certificate
  • 10th certificate
  • Migration certificate
  • Character certificate
  • Internship certificate
  • PhD certificate

The route

  1. Sealed by a Notary Public. Done in Delhi, with a register entry against your document. Without it the magistrate has nothing to attest and the file cannot proceed.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  2. Attestation by an SDM. The magistrate certifies that the Notary who sealed your document is genuine. It is the fast lane through the State-level requirement and it happens in Delhi.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  3. State Higher Education Department, if named. A minority of institutions require it, almost always with university verification before it. Both stages happen in the issuing State and both are arranged by you.Arranged by you
  4. Ministry stage, New Delhi. MEA satisfies itself the previous seal is genuine, then applies its own. This is the stage that makes the document usable in Chile, and it is lodged through a registered agency.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  5. MEA apostille — the final stage for Chile. A numbered sticker with a QR code goes on the reverse of the document. Because Chile is an Apostille Convention country there is no mission stage at all, and Chile embassy attestation is simply the phrase people search for.Final stage
3. Commercial documents

Company, trade and export paperwork

Corporate paperwork takes the shortest of the three routes, but it starts somewhere else entirely. A Chamber of Commerce stands in for the Notary and the magistrate, and a Chile file that goes to a magistrate instead comes straight back.

What is in this group

  • Power of Attorney
  • Board Resolution
  • Memorandum of Association (MOA)
  • Articles of Association (AOA)
  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Partnership deed
  • Trade licence
  • Commercial invoice
  • Certificate of Origin
  • Packing list
  • Distribution agreement
  • Agency agreement
  • Memorandum of Understanding
  • Free Sale Certificate
  • Price list
  • Certificate of Analysis
  • Export documents
  • Shareholding pattern
  • Letter of Authority
  • Audited balance sheet

The route

  1. Attestation by a recognised Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber verifies the issuing company and seals the paperwork. Commercial documents start here, not with a Notary, and never pass through an SDM.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  2. Ministry of External Affairs stage. The seal beneath is matched to MEA's records and the Ministry's own sticker applied. Documents for Chile cannot skip it, and since 2012 it has been lodged through an agency rather than over the counter.Handled by INFINITYGRO
  3. MEA apostille — the final stage for Chile. A numbered sticker with a QR code goes on the reverse of the document. Because Chile is an Apostille Convention country there is no mission stage at all, and Chile embassy attestation is simply the phrase people search for.Final stage

Not sure which family your paperwork falls into? Send a photograph before you pay for anything. In Chile embassy attestation a document pushed down the wrong chain cannot be corrected at the next counter; it goes back to stage one, and the earlier fees are gone.

Chile embassy attestation for each document type

Chilean files are dominated by work, residency and study, and the document set reflects that. One Chile embassy attestation chain, several very different reasons for needing it.

Degree certificate apostille for Chile

A degree certificate apostille for Chile is asked for by universities offering credit transfer or postgraduate places, and by professional bodies registering engineers, geologists and medical staff. Transcripts normally travel with the degree, and both usually need Spanish translation.

Work visas and university places

Diploma, ITI and trade certificates

Polytechnic diplomas and ITI trade certificates follow the same route. Chilean mining, construction and aquaculture employers recruit technicians, and they look at the trade certificate rather than a degree.

Technical qualifications

Birth certificate apostille for Chile

A birth certificate apostille for Chile is needed for dependant visas, residency applications for children, school admission and registration with the Registro Civil. Send the registrar's certificate, not a hospital slip.

Residency and dependants

Marriage certificate apostille for Chile

A marriage certificate apostille for Chile comes up in spouse visas, residency and registering a foreign marriage with the Registro Civil. The certificate must be the one issued by the registrar.

Spouse visas and Registro Civil

Police Clearance Certificate

An Indian Police Clearance Certificate is commonly required for a Chilean residency application. It is apostilled like any public document, and because a PCC has a limited useful life for most authorities, time it so it does not go stale while the visa is processed.

PCC

Commercial and company documents

Invoices, certificates of origin and company documents go through a Chamber of Commerce before the Ministry. Chile's mining and food import trade generates a steady flow of these, and Spanish versions are usually expected.

Chamber of Commerce first

What changes Chile embassy attestation fees

Chile embassy attestation fees are lower than people expect, because the embassy stage does not exist. These are the things that still move the figure.

1No embassy stage

Chile is an apostille country, so no foreign mission charges anything at the end of your file.

2Translation into Spanish

The real cost driver for Chile. Whether it is done in India or by a translator recognised in Chile changes both the price and the timeline.

3Whether State authentication is asked for

If a Chilean university or professional college insists on it, that is a separate process you arrange and pay for directly.

4How many documents travel together

Degree, transcripts, PCC, birth and marriage certificates sent in one envelope share the journey rather than paying for several.

5Courier and timing

Tracked courier both ways from outside Delhi, and any genuinely urgent deadline, are priced accordingly.

The degree certificate fees page breaks the charges down stage by stage, and polytechnic and ITI qualifications are covered on the diploma certificate fees page. Send a photograph and you will get a figure for your own documents.

Chile: the translation question, and who goes there

Indians going to Chile are not a large group, but they are a distinctive one, and the paperwork follows the work.

Mining and metals. Chile is the world's largest copper producer and a major lithium source, and it recruits mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists and plant technicians. Professional registration there usually wants the degree, the full transcript and the experience record, all apostilled and translated.

Agriculture, wine and seafood. Fruit export, viticulture and salmon farming bring in agronomists, food technologists and quality staff, with trade and company documents travelling alongside personal ones.

Astronomy and research. The observatories in the Atacama attract Indian researchers and engineers on fixed-term contracts, and university and institute paperwork follows the standard apostille route.

Students and residency. Credit transfer, postgraduate admission and family residency applications make up the rest.

In every one of those cases the apostille is the easy part. Plan the Spanish translation at the same time, not afterwards, and ask the receiving body in writing whether a translation done in India is acceptable or whether it must be done in Chile. Getting that answer first saves the most time of anything on this page.

Where our Chile embassy attestation work stops

Most disputes in this trade come from unstated limits, so here is exactly where our Chile embassy attestation work stops.

Someone else's stage

  • University and board verification. This is a direct application to the awarding institution and we take no part in it.
  • State HRD or home department authentication. Arranged by you; anything that department charges is paid to them.
  • Spanish translation. Quoted separately where we arrange it, and not something we can do at all if the receiving body insists on a translator recognised in Chile.
  • Immigration and application charges. Paid by you to whichever office is handling the application itself.
  • Re-issue of a lost or damaged certificate. Only the issuing authority can do that.

INFINITYGRO is a private facilitation service, not a government authority, and no agency can skip a statutory stage or guarantee a decision that rests with the Ministry or a foreign mission.

The set that starts the work

Once the route and the translation question are settled, this is the set that starts the work. With these, Chile embassy attestation can start the same day.

  • The original document, flat and unlaminated
  • Transcripts or consolidated marksheets, which Chilean bodies usually ask for
  • The written requirement from the Chilean university, employer or authority
  • A passport copy, photo page and address page
  • The signed authorisation letter, from the template we email
  • Return address and mobile number, unless you are collecting

If you have five minutes, read the mistakes people make with certificate apostille. The HRD attestation guide covers the State branch in detail.

This mission does not attest or legalise Indian documents. Because Chile is an Apostille Convention country, the apostille is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi and the chain ends there. We publish these details because people ask for them, and they are useful for visa and other consular enquiries — but do not take your documents here expecting a stamp.

Chile embassy attestation: common questions answered

If you are wondering about Chile embassy attestation, one of these is probably your question.

Does Chile still need embassy attestation on Indian documents?

No. Chile has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 30 August 2016, so an MEA apostille replaces consular legalisation entirely. Nothing goes to the Chilean Embassy in New Delhi. Pages and quotations that still describe a Chilean Embassy stamp have not been updated in a decade.

Do I need the document translated into Spanish, and who does it?

Almost certainly yes, because Chile works in Spanish. Who may do it is the part to check: some authorities accept a translation prepared in India and apostilled along with the original, while others insist on a translator recognised in Chile or on the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs translation service. Ask the receiving office in writing before paying for either.

Should the translation be apostilled too, or only the original?

It depends on how the translation is produced. If it is made and notarised in India, it can be carried through the same chain and apostilled with the original, which many Chilean bodies accept. If the translation is to be done in Chile, only the original needs the apostille here. The receiving body decides, so get the answer before you start.

I am going to Chile as a mining engineer. What will they ask for?

Typically the degree, the complete transcript and your experience certificates, apostilled and translated, plus a Police Clearance Certificate for the residency application. Professional registration bodies examine the course content, so send the transcript rather than just the degree and expect questions about subject hours.

What do Chile embassy attestation fees come to now?

There is no embassy fee at all, because the mission stage does not apply. You pay the Ministry's fixed statutory charge per document, the notary and SDM stages, our handling and the courier, plus translation if we arrange it. Send a photograph of the document and we will quote the whole thing in writing.

How long is an apostille valid for use in Chile?

The apostille itself does not expire. What can expire is the underlying document: a Police Clearance Certificate, for instance, is usually treated as current only for a limited period by immigration authorities. Time the PCC so it is still fresh when the application is lodged, rather than apostilling it a year ahead.

Ask what your Chilean file needs before you pay for a translation

Chile embassy attestation no longer exists as a separate stamp. Send a photograph of the document and the requirement you were given, and you will get the route, the translation answer and the figure in writing.
